The nephew of Michael K Williams, a popular actor in The Wire, has opened up about his shock at finding his uncle lying dead in his flat.
Williams was found dead in September last year, with the cause of death later revealed to have been a tragic accident after the popular TV star overdosed on a cocktail of deadly drugs.
The actor, who also appeared in Boardwalk Empire, had been candid about struggling with drug abuse in the past, telling Men’s Health that he was a “user”.
So, when his nephew Dominic Dupont didn’t hear back from him for an unusually long time, he became concerned.
“I was shopping with my wife, Mike had some work to do the next day and I’d reached out to him the night before, and I was concerned that I’d not heard from him,” he told Jada Pinkett-Smith in a preview release of an episode of her Red Table Talks podcast.
“We’d made the decision to go to his house. I went upstairs, opened up his door and it was quiet; Michael always played music [but] that wasn’t the case.
“I stuck my head in and said, ‘Uncle Mike, are you in here? And I observed him deceased.
“I immediately called 911 and they said, ‘listen, do you want to start some compressions?’ And I said, ‘I’m telling you, he’s deceased, he’s gone, he’s cold’.”
After the star’s death, the New York City medical examiner’s autopsy confirmed that Williams had traces of fentanyl, p-fluorofentanyl, heroin and cocaine in his system at the time of his passing.
Tributes quickly poured in, with The Wire co-star Wendell Pierce tweeting: “The depth of my love for this brother can only be matched by the depth of my pain learning of his loss.”
Weeks after the 54 year-old’s death, some viewers were left shocked when he didn’t receive an Emmy for being best-supporting actor for his part in HBO horror drama Lovecraft County.
One upset user tweeted: “Michael K Williams was a brilliant actor who was great on Lovecraft Country. I really would have loved to see him take home the win.”
