Only Fools and Horses star Ron Pember has died aged 87.

The sad news Ron, who played the role of Baz, the Chairman of the Tenants’ Association, died on Tuesday was confirmed by his grandson Paul.

Paul said: “‘The sadness now is the happiness then. That’s the deal.’11.04.1934 – 08.03.2022 #ronpember #grandad.”

The Only Fools and Horses Twitter account reposted the message.

It said with the post: “We are saddened to hear of the news of the death of Ron Pember who played Baz in the series 3 episode ‘Homesick’.

As well as his 1983 appearance in Only Fools and Horses, Ron appeared in another iconic Brit comedy Red Dwarf in 1988 as a tax collector in he Better Than Life episode and played Alain Muny in the 1970s BBC drama series Secret Army.

What’s more Ron wrote a stage musical entitled Jack the Ripper in 1975, which told the story of a serial killer who murdered prostitutes in London in the late 1880s.

Many of Ron’s celebrity pals rushed to Twitter to pay tribute to him.

Actor Danny John Jules who played Cat in Red Dwarf said: “Just heard the sad news that Ron Pember has passed away.

“He was such a gentleman with us upstarts when he appeared on #RedDwarf He just rammed his tongue firmly into his cheek and joined the party! What a legend. RIP.”

The official Red Dwarf Twitter account also rushed to pay tribute to Ron, saying: “RIP Ron Pember. A terrific character actor, stage director and dramatist who made a memorable appearance in Series II’s Better Than Life.”

British author Danny Kelly tweeted a tribute to the star, saying: “RIP Ron Pember, actor in every TV show of the 70s and 80s.”

Talking Pictures TV wrote: “Dear Ron Pember has left us for the cinema in the sky, leaving us behind a legacy of characters that always showcased his great talent. RIP.

“And, crucially, Alain in the greatest UK drama series, Secret Army. Go peacefully ‘down the line’, Ron.”

Ron, born in Essex 1934, married his wife Yvonne Tylee in 1959.He stopped acting after suffering a stroke in 1992, and retired to live in Southend-on-Sea.

His final acting appearances were in BBC courtroom drama Rumpole of the Bailey in 1992 and as Joe Bilger in Look at It This Way, also released in the same year.
