Peaky Blinders star Joe Cole tipped to be next super spy in James Bond franchise

Peaky Blinders star Joe Cole is tipped to become the new face of James Bond after his recent appearance in an ITV drama.

He’s about to take the lead role in ITV’s remake of The Ipcress File, playing the part of Harry Palmer.

Palmer is a bespectacled British sergeant who is offered a position as a spy to avoid prison for smuggling, a role made famous by Michael Caine in the 1965 movie based on the book by Len Deighton.

Cole’s portrayal of the sergeant – which has already been seen by critics and reviewers – has led to him being touted as a successor to Daniel Craig as the next James Bond.

Joe has big shoes to fill from Sir Michael Caine

The man himself has played mobsters in shows such as Peaky Blinders and Gangs Of London and spoke about the potential 007 role: “I think every young actor in the UK has been linked to James Bond”.

“I’d like to play James Bond. I’ve played enough villains” he joked.

During his interview on This Morning with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, the presenters touched upon the poignancy of his new series The Ipcress Files and how closely it reflects current affairs.

Joe’s best known role is John Shelby from Peaky Blinders

Joe joined the presenters on the early morning show, looking smart in a burgundy V-neck jumper with a white collar underneath.

Phillip, wearing a green shirt, and Holly, wearing a white jumper, sat opposite him and asked the star about his portrayal of Harry Palmer.

“Set in the 1960s, the height of the Cold War, this massive battle between the East and the West. How very timely,” noted Phillip.

The young star looks set to have a fruitful career ahead of him

Joe exhaled before answering his comment: “Tell me about it. Yeah, it feels very correct for the moment, doesn’t it?”

Some of Joe’s most notable roles include bad boy Luke in teen drama Skins, Tommy in Offender and Frank from Black Mirror’s Hang The DJ.

At the start of his career, he had minor roles in The Bill and Holby City before moving on to create a comedy series with comedy legend and Little Britain star Matt Lucas.

He received a BAFTA nomination of Best Actor for his role in Black Mirror, in which his character is paired up with different people to analyse his personal data and learn who he would be best matched with.
