Phillip Schofield fights tears on This Morning special during emotional Queen tribute

This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield was reduced to tears during a segment about the Queen as the ITV show gave their coverage of her death.

In a special memorial programme, shown without adverts as a mark of respect, Phillip and Holly hosted a number of guests who discussed her passing.

The presenters then cut to a clip of King Charles III as he addressed his mother in a short speech.

He thanked his “mama” and hoped that she would be joining his “papa,” Prince Phillip who died in 2021, before noting that she will be guided while she makes her final journey.

Her body is travelling up to Scotland before she reaches her final resting place.

Phillip welled up after he head the speech

The clip then cut back to the studio and showed Schofield with tears in his eyes as he tried to compose himself and continue the show.

The ITV star admitted he had tried to give himself a pep talk over the weekend and wanted to remain “stoic” for the sake of the show but couldn’t help his watery eyes.

As he tried to hold back the tears, Phillip explained himself to the audience.

The pair were moved by his words

He said: “I’ve spent the entire weekend thinking: ‘Right, you’re on on Monday. You don’t cry, you pull yourself together. Be stoic, that’s what we will have to do. Keep calm and carry on,’ but those were beautiful words.”

A guest added: ‘He spoke the nation, not just as head of state in that moment, but as a father, a grandfather. I liked that show of emotion, he was clearly having to [compose] himself. He was looking down, he paused, but he is a very emotional man and I thought in a moment of such national sorrow, it was absolutely right for him to wear his heart on his sleeve.”

Schofield managed to keep it together

Vanessa Feltz also said: “It was so astounding […] there’s a feeling that it will be alright, but also feeling: ‘Oh my gosh, if we could just give you a hug, or hold your hand, or tell you how well you’re doing’.”

They then moved on a discussed his appearance with the crowd following his mother’s death and how “moved” he was to hear cries of “God save the King”.
