Sarah Ferguson pays tribute to 'most incredible mother-in-law' as Queen dies

Sarah The Duchess of York has shared a touching tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth who has died aged 96.

The Duchess said she was “heartbroken” following the news of the death of her late mother-in-law who died peacefully at one of her favourite homes, Balmoral in Scotland.

In a statement shared with the Daily Star, the Duchess said: “I am heartbroken by the passing of Her Majesty the Queen.”

Sarah, 62, had been in Venice just hours before the death of Her Majesty when her former husband, Prince Andrew, jetted from RAF Brize Norton to be with his mother at Balmoral.

Despite her and Prince Andrew divorcing in 1996, Sarah and the Queen maintained a close bond with the Duchess often praising the late Monarch.

The mum-of-two said: “She leaves behind an extraordinary legacy: the most fantastic example of duty and service and steadfastness, and a constant steadying presence as our head of state for more than 70 years.

“She has given her whole life selflessly to the people of the UK & the Commonwealth.

“To me, she was the most incredible mother-in-law and friend. I will always be grateful to her for the generosity she showed me in remaining close to me even after my divorce.

“I will miss her more than words can express.”

Buckingham Palace announced at 6.30pm that Her Majesty had died, just six hours after an initial statement saying she had been placed under medical supervision by doctors at Balmoral.

They said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.”

It went on to state that the King and Queen Consort would remain at the Scottish castle overnight before returning to London for a period of official mourning.

Sarah and her former brother-in-law, King Charles III are the only relatives of the late Queen to publicly share their condolences.

In a statement, the new King said: “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother.

“I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.

“During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”
