Strictly star's famous sister felt 'terrible' when brother dedicated his dance to her

Strictly Come Dancing star Tom Fletcher left his famous sister Carrie Hope Fletcher emotional when he dedicated his dance to her.

Carrie confessed she felt “terrible” when Tom performed a routine with professional partner Amy Dowden inspired by the musical Les Miserables – the same musical Carrie got her big West End break in.

Carrie played Eponine in the London production, so fittingly, Tom danced to Eponine’s famous song On My Own.

Sadly, it was also the routine that saw him evicted from the Strictly dance floor, and lose his chance lifting the Glitterball.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star, Carrie confessed: “Oh god, it was so emotional. So, so emotional! But it was the one he got voted out on, so I felt terrible.

“My brother has rooted for me through the whole of my musical theatre career – and when I was a kid, playing Eponine was all I thought about. I ate, slept and breathed Les Mis.

“That part was so precious to me, and getting that call to say I got the part was life changing because it led to where I am now. If I hadn’t have gotten that part, maybe I wouldn’t have gotten into the other shows that I ended up in. It was the start of everything.

“So to have Tom dance to On My Own, oh god, it was so emotional and the whole family were in tears.”

Opening up further about her brother’s Strictly stint, Cinderella star Carrie explained: “He came to the Gillian Lynne theatre where I was performing in Cinderella at the time [to film] the VT bit that shows before the dance.

“We just sat there and cried at each other. They didn’t show those bits. You only had a 30 second VT before his dance, but Amy Dowden, bless her, just watched us sit there and sob at each other. We’re very emotional us Fletchers!”

Carrie also opened up on the effect the sudden cancellation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella had on her and the rest of the cast.

Lloyd Webber was booed coming off stage as the ill-fated play closed in the West End earlier this year due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis.

Carrie explained: “It was tough. It was a really tough situation for everyone to be in.

“From a production point of view they didn’t want the news that the show was closing to leak, which meant they didn’t tell the cast until the very last moment.

“It was just the fact that they told the current cast, who were actually in the show, 15 minutes after the Sunday matinee that it ended.

“10 minutes later it was all over Twitter, so there was no time for the new cast who were waiting to come in to be told. They found out they lost their jobs via social media.

“These people had been offered other jobs that they’d turned down in order to do Cinderella,” she added.

Carrie is making her pantomime debut this Christmas at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury for Sleeping Beauty – and is excited to take on her first ever villain role.

She gushed: “I’m playing the role of Carabosse, but they’ve changed my name to Carriebosse. This is my debut. It’s also my villain debut which I’m very excited about – I don’t think anyone has ever been so excited to be booed before!”

Tickets are on sale now for Sleeping Beauty featuring Carrie Hope Fletcher, which runs from Friday, November 25 until Sunday, January 8.
