The Masked Dancer's Joel Dommett so nervous at work he frets health will deteriorate

Joel Dommett is likely to be racked by nerves when he hosts October’s National Television Awards – and he can’t wait.

The presenter, 37, admits he’s a “psycho” because he enjoys going through hell when he does live TV.

He said: “The thing about live events is that you can prepare and rehearse and deliver jokes that are written to an inch of their lives, but people always remember the bits you can’t plan for.

“I am a bit of a psychopath when it comes to presenting. I just love the pressure.”

Joel gets so nervous when he hosts big events that he even worries it’ll affect his health. He said: “I still feel new, naive and I still feel like I am learning.

“I wear a heart rate monitor and use my experience of fitness training to breathe properly and try and bring my heart rate down before going on stage so I don’t get overwhelmed.

“But I do think I have come a long way though.

“I am a much more relaxed and calm presenter than I used to be.” Joel hosted the awards for the first time in 2021 and nothing went wrong.

But this year’s show is at OVO Arena in Wembley, which means he’ll be feeling extra pressure. He said: “Wembley is so prestigious. You kind of feel the weight of the name when you are there. It feels a bit more old school.”

Some of TV’s biggest names will be joining him on stage, so anything could happen.

And as it’s airing live, producers won’t be able to edit out any embarrassing moments.

Joel reckons the awards will be TV gold. He said: “I feel like this year will be funnier, more fun. It is going to be wild.”

Joel isn’t just hosting the awards, because he could end up being a winner too.

His show The Masked Singer is nominated in the Talent Show category up against Britain’s Got Talent, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK and Strictly.

He said: “I would love The Masked Singer to win, obviously. I would love to win a National Television Award as well as host it.

“But it will be hard because Strictly is on TV while the awards are on.

“They have a huge cast all tweeting and posting for votes and all I have is Jonathan Ross and Rita Ora, and the rest of the cast are secret!”
