This Morning's Deidre Sanders diagnosed with 'high-grade' breast cancer after NHS error

This Morning star Deidre Sanders has revealed she’s been diagnosed with a “high-grade” and “aggressive” cancer.

The agony aunt, 77, confirmed doctors found a small carcinoma in a duct in her right breast after a NHS error made her miss a routine mammogram appointment.

Deidre had sought medical advice after “feeling achy” and suffering from pain in her shoulders and breast.

Confirming her diagnosis, Deidre wrote: “I have a teeny, tiny carcinoma, a cluster of malignant cells in a duct in my right breast.

“This is labelled high-grade, which means it is the sort that would grow and spread aggressively — had it not been discovered so early.”

Deidre has spoken out about her cancer diagnosis in hopes of encouraging other women not to miss potentially life-saving breast screening appointments.

In a column for The Sun, the TV personality explained it had been “nearly ten years” since her last mammogram.

Deidre also revealed her cancer may have been picked up earlier had she been invited to a routine mammogram seven years prior.

She added: “I happen to be among a cohort of several thousand women who, by error, did not get invited for a mammogram when they turned 70.

“We were offered it a couple of years later, but by then I reckoned I must be too old to need it any more as the NHS stops inviting you for a screening after that age. Hah!”

Deidre didn’t explain what treatment she would receive in the wake of her diagnosis but urged women over 70 to request a breast screening every three years.

The retired journalist will share more and speak about her cancer story on Tuesday’s episode (September 27) of This Morning.

Her colleagues on the ITV daytime programme, including Holly Willoughby, were already aware of her diagnosis.
