Shaun Ryder says mobsters sent from America to sort him out must have got spooked in Salford – because they never showed up.
The Happy Mondays frontman was tipped off the thugs were on the way by a fellow musician they had beaten up in the US, who they told: “Ryder’s getting it as well.’’
Shaun’s pal said they had been sent by a music exec who claimed to be related to Henry Hill Jnr – the gangster-turned-informer whose life story inspired the 1990 movie Goodfellas.
He said: “The thought of these American gangsters wandering around Salford looking for me cracked me up. They never turned up.
“Maybe they got lost – or scared.’’
The star said he heard about the threat from a member of a US hip-hop band the exec had also fallen out with in the 90s.
Shaun said: “He phoned to say he’d had a visit from some goons and when he opened the door they battered him. The message was: ‘Ryder is getting it as well.’
“Someone had been bigging up the fact they were related to Henry Hill. That didn’t intimidate me at all.
“If anyone was sent to find me in Manchester, I wouldn’t rate their chances of getting back on a plane to New York.”
In more recent news, Shaun is one of the celebrities linked to The Masked Singer, as fans have become convinced he’s under the Mushroom costume.
So far, Heather Small, Gloria Hunniford and Will Young have been unmasked after failing to impress the audience.
