As Sugababes singer Mutya Buena turns 37, we’re taking a look at where she and the others members are now.
The pop group are best known for their catchy tunes and for having a revolving door of faces coming to and from the band, with a replacement right around the corner if someone wanted to leave.
They are currently comprised of the three original members Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy, but the lineup changed several times before.
From racism rows to band feuds which led to an entirely new line-up of the trio, the girls faced a lot in their time as the popular girlband.
Let’s take a look at where all of the past and current members are up to now…
Siobhan Donaghy
Siobhan was just 14 when she joined Sugababes and was the first to quit aged 17, in 2001.
At the time, it was unclear why she left, however, she later revealed that she was suffering from clinical depression.
Siobhan had vowed she would never work in the music industry again but soon after carved out a solo career for herself and released a solo album, Revolution in Me.
Later on, the singer got an office job with Storm Models, though reunited with her old bandmates, Mutya and Keisha, in a new group, titled MKS, in 2012. But the trio have now been given the right to perform as Sugababes again.
Siobhan, 37, married her long-term partner Chris McCoy in January 2013 and share a son together called Ford Charles McCoy, who was born in August 2017.
Mutya Buena
Mutya was the next to leave the group in December 2005 to spend more time with her daughter Tahlia.
Though she soon soared to solo success with tracks Real Girl and Song 4 Mutya which made it into the Top 10.
But after some chart-toppers, she went on to step away from showbiz and train to be a children’s psychologist.
In 2009, she went into the Celebrity Big Brother house and followed this with more reality TV on shows such as Celebs Go Dating, Just Tattoo Of Us, as well as Celebrity Coach Trip.
Mutya was declared bankrupt by a High Court judge in 2014 but has since slammed the media coverage of her case as she paid off her debts straight away.
In 2017, she set up her own agency, Colour of Musiq.
Keisha Buchanan
Keisha was the last original three to leave the band in 2009 but was said to be dropped by her label.
She now describes herself as a YouTuber and investor and has almost 700,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel.
Keisha claimed she experienced “trauma” as the only black member of the group and appeared in Leigh-Anne Pinnock’s racism documentary Race, Pop and Power in 2021.
Speaking on her YouTube channel, she also opened up about how she was portrayed by the press as a “bully”, and revealed said the “scrutiny and judgement” made her go to therapy.
She also said in the video: “I used to think racism was when someone directly looked at you and called you a racist word. I didn’t realise that there are so many different ways that a person or people can be racist or prejudice.”
Heidi Range
Despite not being a founding member, Heidi was there for many Sugababes bops.
Before Keisha was given the boot, Heidi sided with newcomer Amelle, who both publicly detailed the mistreatment they felt from their former bandmate.
Heidi and Amelle had decided to leave the group so they didn’t have to put up with the “constant put-downs” anymore, however, producers offered them two the right to stay with a new member.
Prior to joining the Sugababes, she was in Atomic Kitten for several months before being moved bands.
She was also rumoured to be joining the Spice Girls, to replace Victoria Beckham, in 2012.
Heidi later took her talents to the West End and starred in The War of the Worlds, alongside Daniel Bedingfield.
In 2016, she married her partner Alex Partakis and shares two young daughters with him.
Amelle Berrabah
Amelle joined Keish and Heide in the band but was unfortunately in for a rough ride, according to her.
During her Sugababes stint, she was checked into rehab suffering from stress, which she says was caused by other members.
The singer was known as the group’s “bad-girl” as she had been arrested for alleged assaults in 2007 and 2008.
Amelle, 38, was the only one to get a number one on her own during her collab with Tinchy Stryder on Never Leave You.
She also hit the headlines in 2013 after reportedly going bankrupt after her accountant had failed to deal with a whopping £650,000 tax bill.
In January 2020, the star announced her divorce from ex-husband Marcio Sousa Rosa, five years on from tying the knot.
The couple share and co-parent a daughter together, Amirah Hope.
One week after the divorce, Amelle sadly lost her mum and admitted to “breaking down” a lot during this period, which she said was made worse by lockdown.
Jade Ewen
Jade was the last new member of the group and had already shot to fame after representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009.
She came fifth place which made her the most successful British Eurovision act since 2002.
After the band parted ways, she took part in the celebrity diving TV show, Splash! which she later confessed was for the money.
She tried to secure a solo career but things didn’t take off and was also declared bankrupt in 2015 after failing to pay a heavy bill.
In recent years, the singer also hit London’s West End and landed the role of Princess Jasmine in Aladdin.
Jade, 34, ended up falling head over heels with her co-star Daniel de Bourg and got engaged in 2018.
She is now focused more on acting and recently stripped off for a steamy scene in the Netflix show Luis Miguel, where she played Mariah Carey.
