Worry mounts for King Charles III as he keeps hands under table during King's Speech

ITV viewers have expressed their worry for King Charles III after noticing he kept his ‘swollen’ hands under the table during his first ever King’s Speech.

Charles, 73, paid a loving tribute to his “mama” Queen Elizabeth II after her death yesterday (September 8), aged 96, as he said: “To my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: thank you.

“Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years. May ‘flights of angels sing thee to thy rest’.”

He also wished Harry and Meghan well with their overseas work, along with pronouncing Catherine and William the new Prince and Princess of Wales.

But viewers watching at home became concerned for the new sovereign, pointing out that His Majesty seemed to be keeping his hands out of shot after a picture of his ‘swollen’ fingers went viral.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: “They’ve deffo told Charles to keep his hands below the desk [crying emoji].”

As another said: “I’m watching the King’s Speech at this very moment and I do understand why he’s hiding his hands under the table.”

“Put your hands on the table King Charles,” someone else begged.

A fourth then added: “Charles, why is he hiding his fingers?”

Others continued to express their sympathy for Charles over the death of his mother, as one emotional viewer said: “Seeing King Charles sitting at Queen Elizabeth’s desk broke my heart.

“I feared any moment now the King was about to cry. The pain is obvious to see.”

Others promised the country is in “safe hands” after seeing such an “impassioned” speech from the new King.

He added in the speech: “As the Queen herself did with such unswerving devotion, I too now solemnly pledge myself, throughout the remaining time God grants me, to uphold the Constitutional principles at the heart of our nation.”

Meanwhile, Dr Gareth Nye, Senior Lecturer at the University of Chester, has spoken to the Daily Star about the possible causes of King Charles’ swollen fingers.

The doctor pointed to oedema, or fluid retention, explaining: “Oedema is a condition where the body starts to retain fluids in the limbs, normally the legs and ankles but also in the fingers which causes them to swell.

“Oedema is a common condition and mostly affects people over the age of 65 as the ability for fluid control is restricted,” he added.

The professional also added that swelling can be caused by arthritis, another common condition.

Dr. Nye concluded: “Uncommon causes may include high salt diet leading to fluid retention, certain medications can rarely lead to swelling as a side effect such as with blood pressure medications or steroid medications.

“There certainly aren’t any immediate health concerns to be concluded from swollen fingers and is most likely a sign of his age.”
