BBC News viewers have taken to social media to show support to Clive Myrie after they spotted “tears in his eyes” after his colleague Huw Edwards was named as the star facing allegations over payments for sexually explicit images.
Edwards’ wife, Vicky Flint, named him in a statement issued to the media on Wednesday (July 12).
Sophie Raworth was the first presenter to report the statement on the BBC during the News at Six programme.

She said at the programme began: “At Six, Huw Edwards is the presenter accused of paying a teenager for explicit photos.”
Later on in the evening, Clive presented News at 10 when he began: “He is one of the most recognisable faces on British television, anchoring national and international events often from this very chair.
“But tonight, Huw Edwards, the lead anchor of the BBC’s News at 10, has been revealed as the man at the centre of allegations over the payment of thousands of pounds to a young person for explicit pictures.
“After what have been five extremely difficult days, Huw Edwards has not resigned from the BBC.”
BBC viewers watching at home couldn’t help but notice emotional Clive’s sombre tone.
One fan penned: “Clive Myrie putting a strong face on #bbcnews I can see the tears in the corner of his eyes Thinking of the BBC News team tonight.”
Another added: “I’m sure I saw tears in Clive Myrie’s eyes tonight. It must have been so hard for him.”
A third person said: “Poor Clive Myrie reporting with tears in his eyes.”
Following days of intense speculation as to the identity of the BBC presenter at the centre of the allegations, Edwards’ wife Vicky said in a statement that she was speaking out on her husband’s behalf as he is “suffering from serious mental health issues” and receiving “in-patient hospital care”.
She said: “In light of the recent reporting regarding the BBC presenter, I am making this statement on behalf of my husband Huw Edwards, after what have been five extremely difficult days for our family.
“I am doing this primarily out of concern for his mental well-being and to protect our children.
“Huw is suffering from serious mental health issues. As is well documented, he has been treated for severe depression in recent years.
“The events of the last few days have greatly worsened matters, he has suffered another serious episode and is now receiving in-patient hospital care where he’ll stay for the foreseeable future.”
