Coronation Street triumph at British Soap Awards 2023 but miss out on top gong

Coronation Street trumped at the British Soap Awards 2023.

The cast and crew went away from the glitzy ceremony with a whopping six gongs on Saturday (June 3) night.

They won the award for Best Single Episode, Scene of the Year, Best Dramatic Performance, Best Comedy Performer, Best Newcomer and Best Family.

EastEnders won four awards, including Best Soap, two awards went to Hollyoaks, and both Emmerdale and Doctors received one piece of silverware each.

The Corrie acid attack storyline involving Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan), Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) and Justin Rutherford (Andrew Still) won two awards.

Evelyn Plummer actress Maureen Lipman was crowned winner of Best Comedy Performer beating off competition from Hollyoaks’ Kieron Richardson, EastEnders’ Jonny Freeman, Emmerdale’s Samantha Giles and Doctors actor Ian Midlane.

Channique Sterling-Brown, who plays Dee-Dee Bailey in Corrie, won Best Newcomer and The Platts were named as Best Family.

EastEnders youngster Lilia Turner, better known as Lily Slater, was crowned the winner of Best Young Performer and her co-star Aaron Thiara, who plays Ravi Gulati, won Villain of the Year.

Emmerdale legend Mark Charnock was left gobsmacked after he received the Outstanding achievement Award.

His former co-stars Sherre Murphy, Gemma Atkins and Verity Rushworth presented him the award in emotional scenes.

Elsewhere, Jane McDonald took to the stage for the first time as host following Phillip Schofield’s decision to step back from all his ITV work.

Following the announcement, an excited Jane said the job was a “dream come true”.

“This year I’ve been honoured to be mentioned in Corrie, EastEnders and Emmerdale… I can’t wait to see all our wonderful soap nominees and celebrate all their hard work with them,” she added.

Phillip stepped down after admitting he had an affair with a “younger male colleague” when he was married to his wife.

The British Soap Awards 2023 airs on Tuesday, June 6 at 8pm
