Corrie’s Peter Barlow star issued stern warning as he quits ITV soap after 23 years

Coronation Street’s Chris Gascoyne has been issued a stern warning after it was reported he has quit the soap after 23 years.

The actor, 55, is best known for playing Peter Barlow on the long-running ITV show – making his debut way back in 2000.

Since then, he’s been involved in a slew of dramatic and big storylines, including the character’s many affairs and battle with alcohol.

But in July, it was reported that Chris was saying goodbye to the cobbles, with a source claiming he feels it’s the “right time” for him to pursue other projects.

Chris has been a regular on the soap for over two decades

And now, ahead of his no-doubt dramatic exit from Coronation Street, Chris has been told he “needs to be smart” once his stint on the soap is over.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star, Dom Aldworth, Head of Brand Marketing at Slingo said: “Ultimately, it’s not unusual for soap stars to leave a show in the hopes of trying something new.

“But it is also not uncommon for an actor to return to the show when their exit does not go as well as planned.

“Chris Gascoyne has said this will be an extended break, so he will need to be smart about the path he takes if he wants to find long-term success outside of Coronation.”

Dom then went on to say that if Chris wants to “stay relevant” he needs to be “deliberate” with what he does next.

The expert explained: “Unlike more youth-facing soaps like Hollyoaks which have a fan base that follows the cast closely on social media, Coronation Street attracts an older demographic.

“This means despite his veteran status, Gascoyne will need to be deliberate with his next moves if he wants to further his career and stay relevant in the industry.”

An insider told The Sun: “Chris has decided to take an extended break from the soap.

“He loves working at Coronation Street but he’s got a lot of things he wants to do and the time is right for him to take a break and pursue other roles.

“It isn’t a final goodbye and the door is very much being left open.”
