Glynis Barber addresses EastEnders ‘daughter’ Rita Simons joining Hollyoaks

Hollyoaks star Glynis Barber has shared her thoughts on former on-screen daughter Rita Simons joining the Channel 4 soap.

It was confirmed last month that Rita, who played Roxy Mitchell on EastEnders for 10 years before getting killed off, is set to join Hollyoaks.

And now Glynis, who played Roxy’s mum Glenda Mitchell on the BBC soap, has responded to Rita’s Hollyoaks casting – even teasing that their characters could become intertwined.

As viewers will know, Glynis left EastEnders in 2011 after a year – she then joined Hollyoaks over 10 years later, playing Norma Crow.

And it seems the soap star is over the moon to hear that Rita will be setting foot in the famous Cheshire village.

“I am absolutely thrilled,” Glynis said in a recent interview.

“She’s a great girl I love her, she’s a friend of mine, she’s great fun with a great energy and I think there’s going to be some very exciting times ahead….”

Teasing future storylines, she added: “There’s so much potential of storylines that could happen with Rita coming in. The big questions are, what will those storylines be, and where will they go with this.”

And of course, Glynis is keen for an on-screen reunion with Rita, as she quipped: “I’m just hoping it’s going to be something that involves Norma…”

Rita made a cameo reappearance in EastEnders in April this year as Roxy imagined by her daughter Amy Mitchell (Ellie Dadd) during a family counselling session.

Despite her brief return to Walford, Rita’s upcoming storyline on Hollyoaks will “certainly ruffle feathers and is set to stir the pot.”

A source added to The Sun: “Hollyoaks fans can expect plenty of fireworks.”

It has been six years since Roxy drowned alongside her sister Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack) in heartbreaking scenes.

Rita, who previously took part in I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, previously revealed she refused to film certain death scenes for the BBC One soap.

She told the publication at the time: “I got pulled aside a couple of days before filming the final scene by an exec, who I cannot name for legal reasons, who said to me, ‘There are a lot of people upstairs who don’t agree with this’.

“They said, ‘If you want any chance at ever bringing Roxy back, you have to refuse to die’. So I have sat on this for six years and said nothing.

“Go back and watch it online and you will see next to nothing of me at all. I also refused to do the coffin scene. I was asked directly to my face and I refused point blank.”
