Harvey Weinstein begs 'please don't sentence me to life in prison' after sex crimes

Former Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein had had 16 years added to his 23-year sentence for rap and sexual assault charges.

The 70-year-old will spend 16 more years in prison for a separate conviction in New York.

More than 80 people have made rape and misconduct claims about Weinstein, with some dating back as far as the late 1970s, though he has denied ever having non-consensual sex.

He was found guilty of rape and two other sexual misconduct charges involving a woman known as Jane Doe One after a trial in December.

The victim testified that he assaulted her in a hotel room during an Italian film festival in LA in February 2013.

Before his sentencing, he begged judge Lisa Lench for “mercy” and said he “didn’t deserve” to spend life behind bars as he said: “Your Honour… I maintain that I am innocent.”

He claimed he doesn’t know Jane Doe One and added: “This is a made-up story. With all due respect, Jane Doe One is an actress… Jane Doe One can turn on the tears.”

“Please don’t sentence me to life in prison, I don’t deserve it. I beg your mercy”.

Prior to the sentencing, the court heard a victim statement from Jane Doe One who said Weinstein’s “selfish and disgusting” actions had “broken me into a million pieces”.

She told Judge Lench: “I have been carrying this weight for 12 months.”

In the trial which took place in December, Weinstein was acquitted of sexual battery against another accuser.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict on three other sexual assault counts, including one involving Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The LA trial also brought up the incident where Weinstein’s defence team reportedly labelled Siebel as “just another bimbo who slept with Harvey Weinstein to get ahead in Hollywood”.

His attorney also used the trial as referendum on the #MeToo movement, with defence attorney Alan Jackson telling jurors: “The truth is immutable. It’s not a feeling. It’s not a whim. It’s not a hashtag.”

Weinstein is already serving a 23-year sentence for a separate rape and sexual assault conviction in New York, which is currently under appeal.
