British sitcoms that had American versions made have quite often failed to capture the imagination of their new audiences, regardless of their success and awards in blighty

While The Office is probably one of the most successful ever comedies to make the leap to US screens, the series is a member of a select club.

The Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant creation had a shaky start in its first season with American audiences, but won over critics in subsequent series.

But the transition from British screens to the US market hasn’t always been as successful, and a shaky start often sees a plug pulled.

What may have been lapped up on one side of the Atlantic is met with apathy on the other side, as the new series fails to capture the imagination of its new audience.

The following are some of the ill-fated sitcoms that made the journey to the American market, but failed to get off the ground.

Despite in some circumstances throwing some high profile actors into the roles, whether cultural differences or just different senses of humour, they just didn’t work.
