One nightclub played host to a range of A-listers who apparently behaved so badly they should have been “jailed”.
That legendary venue was Tramp in London. Named after the Charlie Chaplin character, it played host to everyone from Liz Hurley to Rod Stewart to Prince Andrew to Tara Palmer-Tomkinson over the years. For more than half a century, Tramp prided itself on its discretion for its high-profile fanbase.
It even inspired the erotic 1969 novel by Jackie Collins, entitled The Stud – with the 1978 film shot there. One raunchy scene saw Jackie’s sister romp fully naked on a swing over a swimming pool.

But in real life, things were even wilder. Kate Moss once hosted a DJ set there that was apparently so good guests quite literally ended up swinging from the chandeliers. The Who drummer Keith Moon turned up fully starkers and strapped to the bonnet of a Rolls-Royce, before heading inside to swing from a 17th-century lighting unit and brought the whole thing crashing to the floor, along with some of the ceiling.
He was almost barred from the venue but after a fit of sobbing, was let back in. Rod Stewart, meanwhile, claimed: “It’s lucky they didn’t have camera phones back in those days at Tramp or we’d all be in prison… the things we got up to.”
Rod used the club as his own “private dating service”, according to The Sun, while socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson regularly turned up in her bikini. Mick Jagger once turned up with his new girlfriend – Jerry Hall – only to discover that his estranged wife Bianca was already holed up in the club loo.
American actor Jack Nicholson is said to have French-kissed a homeless man who was begging for change outside the club entrance. George Best says he “punched Michael Caine to the floor” in the club one night. And even Rihanna and Drake have called the club home at one point or another.
The list goes on. Actress Shirley MacLaine recalled falling asleep at a table while Mel Brooks ran around imitating a dog and barking at the top of his voice. Shirley would order the sausage and mash only to “form them into the shape of a man’s genitals”. And Marlon Brando usually stayed for a breakfast of pasta, refusing to leave until he was served.
The club was established by the late Johnny Gold, along with Bill Ofner and Oscar Lerman. 300 people were signed up to become founding members for a fee of just ten guineas – £10.50. Today, new members have to pay £1,000 per year for the same honour.

No dress code existed in the dimly-lit club, and paparazzi were firmly kept out. But now the nightclub has closed in a rather mysterious manner. Five of its key directors resigned in unison, according to the Daily Mail, while subscribers received an email to tell them the club was closed as it has been “sold”.
One fashion show organiser claimed to the publication that their event was cancelled unless they could pay £2,000 up front. They told the Mail: “I got a call saying the club was sold and cancelling my event – unless I could pay £2,000 up front. It’s very sad. I’ve had a great relationship with Tramp for years.”
