Emmerdale fans were left utterly heartbroken after one major character announced their exit from the ITV village in dramatic scenes.
Last week, the Dingle family revealed a multitude of secrets as they attempted to try and work out who killed Lydia Dingle’s rapist Craig Reed. Arguably, the biggest secret uncovered during the special week of episodes was that Sam Dingle revealed to wife Lydia that he had attacked Craig before his death.
Craig was later found dead in a field at Home Farm, with Sam convinced that he had delivered the killing blow. However, his half-brother Cain Dingle knew that Craig was actually killed by Kim Tate’s horse, Ice.

On Monday (November 6) the loveable resident was questioned by police, but wife Lydia was noticeably absent and unable to support him or backup his alibi. Later in the show, Sam was released after officers discovered a major piece of evidence that cleared his name.
He was sent home and told Cain and Mandy how officers had received forensic evidence showing Craig had died after a blow to the head from a horse. Despite Sam revealing the good news to his wife, Lydia was less than pleased.
Sam said: “It wasn’t my fault, Craig dying. It’s supposed to be a good thing, coppers letting me go.” Lydia replied: “He still died, you still did what you did, you can’t just undo that.”
The doting husband pleaded with his wife to let him make things right for good, but the auburn beauty made it clear that what he did was unforgivable. She claimed his actions had “dragged her back there to what he did.”
She added: “How am I supposed to heal when you did that?” It was at this point that Sam became overwhelmed with emotion, gushing: “I love you so much Lydia, how can I make this better?”
Lydia swiftly stood up and snapped: “You can’t not just like that. I can’t be with you Sam, not like this. I need to pack, I need to get away from all of this and I need some space… I’m sorry.”
After the emotional scenes played out, viewers flooded to the social media platform X – formerly known as Twitter – to share their heartache online. One user penned: “Lydia, you need to be there for poor Sam!”
