He might have a reputation as one of Hollywood’s biggest hell-raisers but Johnny Depp is happy these days to live a sedate life in his 19th-century Somerset mansion.
The Pirates of the Caribbean actor feels right at home in the Downton Abbey-like, 850-acre estate that has 12 bedrooms and eight bathrooms.
He bought it for £13million in 2014 and admitted being able to pop out to the shops without being inundated by requests for selfies is all part of the charm of his West Country lifestyle.

“I just love places with character,” he said of his rural retreat. “British people are cool and will greet you as if you are a neighbour – without going over the top.
“I like going to places, seeing things and meeting people, but I’m not the great extrovert that people think. In truth, I’m quite a shy person.
“That’s one of the great things about Britain, and especially Somerset. I can just be me and that’s nice.
“I can go into shops without being surrounded by people wanting selfies. I don’t mind that up to a point, but sometimes it gets a little too crowded.”
The Kentucky-born Golden Globe winner is even exploring other parts of the UK and stunned staff at Hemswell Antique Centre in Lincolnshire earlier this month when he arrived by helicopter to buy some guitars.
Owner Robert Miller had been told a special guest would be arriving at his shop at 4.30pm, but was still surprised to see the man famous for playing Captain Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands and many more instantly recognisable characters walk through his door.

“He just bought a lot of very quirky items – a desk chair, three guitars, paint sets, easels, a few pictures, posters, just a whole range of things for decorative items for his own personal property,” Miller revealed. “He chose a vase with a skull on it and guitars obviously.
“It was great because he was his normal self and he was very relaxed and was able to spend time looking at things and playing on the guitars that he wanted to play on. He felt very at home.
“He came because we do a lot of work with Pinewood Studios and help with props so have contacts. My staff didn’t know until the last minute.
“He really enjoyed his experience here because he was able to be himself. He said he is in hotels a lot of the time because he’s constantly bombarded by people.
“He was very down to earth and very chatty. For someone like that to come through our doors was brilliant. I’m sure he will be back.”
