Kate Garraway admits money struggle as husband Derek trials 'life-saving' medicine

Kate Garraway has spoken candidly about her financial struggles as she revealed her husband Derek is undergoing “potentially life-saving” medicinal trials.

The Good Morning Britain host opened up about Derek’s recent sepsis battle which saw him just minutes from death and has confessed to mounting costs as he completes his second round of a medical trial in Mexico paid for by Kate.

Despite admitting to her money struggles, Kate insisted there have been “no queue jumps” as people have assumed.

“Perhaps there is the assumption that because I’m on the telly, and because people have heard so much of Derek’s story – and he has touched so many hearts – that we’ve had special treatment from the NHS or bypassed waiting lists,” she said.

“We haven’t jumped any queues, which is just as it should be. There are only so many resources, and we are still waiting on referrals from almost three years ago. Of course, it’s been tough financially.”

Kate thanked those who helped Derek make the 11,000 mile trip to North America with the help of a specialist travel nurse.

“The effort required to get him there is extraordinary, and obviously we are relying on the grace of these specialists to help him,” she told The Sun.

“I can’t thank all those involved in getting him to Mexico enough because without them he wouldn’t have the chance of this potentially life changing treatment.

“The plan is to go back for another round of treatment and continue the trial in a way that is financially viable,” Kate revealed.

Kate also confessed that Derek is sometimes left in “tears” over the difficult battle since contracting Covid in March 2020.

“Every day is a roller coaster. Derek’s spirit fluctuates and sometimes he lies there, unable to move, with tears rolling down his face and it is heart-breaking.

“But if it’s hard for us, I cannot imagine how hard it must be for him,” she added.
