Kim Petras says she's 'tranny with a Grammy' as she's first transgender woman to win

Grammy award winner Kim Petras has become the first transgender woman to win an award during the 2023 ceremony, and later went on to tweet she was a “tranny with a Grammy”.

The event, which took place on Sunday (February 5), saw stars attend the award show in hopes of bagging a Grammy – but one win was extra special for singer Kim Petras, as she later posted on social media: “omg i’m a tranny with a grammy…”

It was announced that Kim’s collaboration with Sam Smith on Unholy had landed the pair Best Duo/Group Performance and they graciously took to the stage to accept the award.

Dressed in matching red outfits, Kim seemed overcome with joy as she stood behind the microphone to make a speech.

Kim was clearly ecstatic about the win

She began: “Oh my god, thank you so much. Crazy! I love you so much. This song has been such an incredible, incredible journey for me. Sam has been such a supporter of mine for so long.”

“Sam graciously wanted me to accept this award because I’m the first transgender woman to win this award!”

Before she could finish her sentence, Kim was met with uproar from the audience as her A-list pals looked on with pride.

Celebs could be seen cheering and clapping for Petras as Sam stood behind her and smiled.

Kim continued: “I just want to thank all the incredible transgender legends before me, who kicked these doors open for me so that I could be here tonight. Sophie, especially. My friend who passed away two years ago, who told me this would happen, who believed in me.”

She went on to thank Sophie for her inspiration and Madonna for “fighting for LGBTQ+ rights,” even admitting that she “wouldn’t be here without her”.

Petras then said thanks to her mother “who believed that she was a girl” and once again admitted that “she wouldn’t be here” if it wasn’t for her mum.

Kim also acknowledged “everyone that had believed in her until this point” as the crowd looked up at the stage and applauded while she clutched the award.

Before she headed off stage, Petras thanked the academy and said that it was “a huge moment”.

She then turned to Smith and gushed: “Sam, thank you. You’re a true angel in my life, and everyone who made the song too! I love you so much.”
