The must-see true crime tale includes “first-hand accounts of alleged devil possession and a shocking murder” which will force viewers to reflect on the fear of the unknown.

Fans who have been brave enough to see The Conjuring 3 will already have an idea of what the documentary is about, but for those who haven’t seen it – here’s what it entails.

In 1981, Arne Cherenne Johnson claimed he had been possessed by a demonic entity that pushed him to murder his landlord Alan Bono during a party.

Despite confessing to the murder, Johnson denied all personal responsibility for the crime, instead blaming the supernatural force who guided his hands.

For the first time in US history, the wild claim was officially put before the court with the jaw-dropping case later going to trial – which quickly became known as the Devil Made Me Do It case.

To defend Johnson’s case, an expert ghost hunting team were enlisted as part of the defence to prove his innocence.

It is understood Ed and Lorraine Warren visited the family prior to the murder while trying to rid 11-year-old David Glatzel of a demon.

Witnesses claimed a demon fled the child’s body and took up residence within Mr Johnson during the formal exorcism.

Moments later, Johnson killed his landlord with his defence lawyer arguing he was possessed by an evil being.

However, the judge ruled that such a defence could never be proven in a court of law and was therefore an infeasible defence.

Johnson was subsequently convicted of the crime, however he only served five years out of a 1- to 20-year sentence.

The chilling tale gripped the media and has since been adapted for both screen and books including the hugely popular film The Conjuring 3.

The Devil on Trial is set to land on Netflix on October 17.
