Now, the 44-year-old has shared his ongoing health struggles as he continues to recover from abusing drink and drugs for so many years. As he sat down with the TV presenter in his music studio, the star choked on his drink and struggled to recover from his coughing fit.
It was at this point that he admitted: “You are looking at a very sick man. I’ve battered it haven’t I? I’ve f**king cained it.” The dad-of-three went on to explain how the drugs have impacted his health in recent years.
Pete explained: “It came from the heroine and the crack, I’ve surrendered to that. And then it was cocaine and smoking and alcohol. And now it’s like cheese and saucisson [French sausage] and the sugar in the tea – it’s all got to go.
“I mean they [doctors] told me a while ago that if you don’t change your diet and stop drinking then you’re going to have diabetes and cholesterol problems. Death’s lurking, you know? That’s why I carry that stick.”
The musician indicated towards his walking stick that he is often pictured out and about with. When Louis playfully joked: “How’s the stick going to help?” Pete replied: “Well, we’ll find out wont we? When push comes to shove.”
He added that he would love to see his then month-old daughter Billie-May learn to talk as he predicted his death on air. Louis suggested: “Maybe you could watch Billie-Mae grow up and start a family of her own.”
However, the hitmaker insisted: “That’s beyond me. 25 years, that’s a stretch, isn’t it?” He went on to reflect on how drugs destroyed his life which he has had to work so hard to restore in the past 10 years.
Pete went on: “My life and using has been so chaotic and the consequences of my using have been so [difficult]. You know you’re prodded your body up and you’ll be skint, and you’ll lose your family, and you’ll lose everything you love.
“Is it really that good? Is that really what you want? Because that’s beyond curiosity, that’s a right mess. I’m not gonna lie, I do still get tingles thinking about it but I’m able to sit down and talk to you rather than running off and scoring.”
The singer went on to confess that he can’t feel proud about getting clean at the moment because but hopes to be able to talk about it “with pride” in the future. He explained: “I feel like I’m being kept on a leash of life.
