Comedian Rhod Gilbert says he was frustrated about receiving his cancer diagnosis after fundraising for the condition for years but confirmed he is “coming back” to his former self after treatment.
The Welshman, 54, announced in July that he had stage four cancer and was being treated at the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, where he had been a fundraising patron before the diagnosis.
Appearing in a video message for Channel 4’s The National Comedy Awards, which was in aid of Stand Up To Cancer, Gilbert joked: “So imagine my surprise when I was diagnosed with cancer which p****d me off no end because I thought I’d have lifelong immunity. Apparently not.

“Apparently, you’re just as likely to get cancer even if you spend your time fundraising for a cancer hospital.
“I did get it and it turns out it can come for anybody at any time.”
Rhod recently vowed to get back on stage after having to postpone his stand-up comedy gigs.
The Never Mind The Buzzcocks star told fans: “I thank each one of you for your continuing patience, rest assured, the show WILL go on.”
The Welsh comedian also explained he’s feeling better by the day after undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
He added: “I’m feeling good and feel like I’m recovering day by day. Some days I’m well enough to do a bit of writing, and I’ve got a feeling when I’ve got through all this, there’ll be a show in it.”
Rhod said he was also looking forward to the rescheduled tour dates for 2023, which have been pushed back until the summer.

Rhod was forced to halt several of his January comedy tour shows when he discovered that he required additional procedures for gallstones and recurring gallbladder infections.
Talking about his new no-filter approach, he said: “Years ago, if I’d gone for a walk down the beach with the dog, I’d have kept my head down and not engaged with anybody.
“Whereas now, if somebody stops me, I’ll end up in an hour’s chat about infertility, cancer, whatever. The most intimate conversations.”
