Squid Game: The Challenge viewers have gone wild after spotting a 90s TV icon in its midst.
The Netflix show sees 456 real life contestants compete for the biggest game show cash prize ever, a whopping $4.56 million, and some viewers were convinced they’d spotted a television star from a very famous 90s show.
Throughout the first episode fans spotted Michael Van Wijk, also known as Wolf, who starred on the sports entertainment show back in the 20th century. It appears Wijk is up for another physical challenge over two decades after he appeared on the series.

Eagle-eyed fans couldn’t wait to check with their fellow viewers and flocked to social media to clarify what they had seen. Many rushed to X, formerly known at Twitter, to share their revelation.
One person wrote: “As if, Wolf from Gladiators is in Squid Game,” while another person typed: “Not Wolf from Gladiators participating in the Squid Game,” with a picture of the star in the crowd attached to their post.
Netflix also played along and jokingly told their fans: “$4.56 million (imaginary) dollars to anyone who spotted this iconic ‘90s villain in Squid Game: The Challenge.”
The screengrab showed Wolf looking less than impressed and the star took to Instagram to explain why he looked so down. Wijk said that he “hasn’t seen the show yet” but is sure that it looks like the challenges “took a few minutes to complete”.
However, Michael revealed that this wasn’t the case: “[…] In reality we had to stand still for a couple of hours in -3 degree temperatures.” Some of Wijk’s fans were completely unaware that the 90s icon was even starring in the new Netflix show.
Upon this discovery, some of his followers rushed to the comment section and told the former Wolf star that they would be “tuning in”. Someone even said that they “weren’t going to watch,” but will now they know Michael is part of the extensive cast list.
Wijk first appeared on Gladiators back in 1992 and appeared in all eight series. The show eventually came to an end in 1999.
