Strictly boss praises ‘exceptional’ Amy Dowden after breast cancer diagnosis

Strictly Come Dancing has issued a statement following the news of Amy Dowden’s breast cancer diagnosis.

The executive producer of the BBC series, Sarah James, has said: “Amy is an exceptional person, both on and off the dance floor, and is adored by her entire Strictly Come Dancing family.

“Everyone on the show is sending Amy all our love and she knows that we are all here to support her, whenever she needs us.”

Amy told her followers on Wednesday morning about her diagnosis as she opened up on the news.

She wrote on Instagram: “Hey all, I’ve got some news which isn’t easy to share,” the 32-year-old began when addressing her followers.

“I’ve recently been diagnosed with breast cancer but I’m determined to get back on that dance floor before you know it.”

Amy was immediately flooded with support from her Strictly co-stars as well as her many fans as they rushed to the comments.

One of her closest friends, Dianne Buswell, wrote: “Our Welsh dragon is going to fight this!!!! and I can not wait for the moment you are back on that dance floor with us. We love you so much Amy.”

Head judge Shirley Ballas also shared a sweet note to Amy writing: “My precious girl. Nanny and I are thinking about you at this time. You are a strong example to so many of resilience which I’ve witnessed first hand.

“A beautiful kind and funny young lady who will face things head on. You are sooo loved. I’ll see you soon my darling friend hugs and lots of warm cuddles.”

Her Strictly co-stars all praised her strength and sent their well-wishes, while Giovanna Fletcher wrote: “Love, love, love you xxxx.”

Giovanna is the wife of Tom Fletcher who was Amy’s Strictly Come Dancing partner in 2021.

Upon opening up to Hello! about her diagnosis, Amy stated that after doing CoppaTrek! with Giovanna Fletcher in support of CoppaFeel! she was encouraged to check her breasts.

She explained that after making a conscious effort to check her breasts she thinks CoppaFeel! may have “saved her life”.

Amy added that she told Tom and Giovanna of the news shortly after finding out and they’ve shared a lot of encouragement.

The dancer is now trying to remain positive and has vowed that she will be back in the ballroom as soon as she can.
