Total Wipeout ‘to return 10 years after axe’ – with X-rated twist for contestants

Total Wipeout is reportedly set to make an epic return to screens, but this time you can expect to see contestants stripping off.

The BBC series, which was previously hosted by Top Gear star Richard Hammond, saw competitors take part in extreme water-based challenges in hopes of winning the jackpot prize of £10,000.

One of the most famous tasks on the assault course was the famous giant red balls which contestants had to run across and avoid tumbling into the water.

The programme originally aired from 2009 to 2012, but now a reboot is reportedly in the works and it is so saucy that it is more likely to be picked up by ITV2 or Channel 4.

A TV insider told The Sun: “Total Wipeout was one of the unsung heroes of British telly, even though it had a huge following when it was on our screens.

“Producers are keen to tap into that again — only this time it may end up with a different name and it will be getting this very modern twist with the nudity element.

“Other shows have seen people keen to strip off on screen, so they’re not worried about getting contestants.”

The telly insider also claimed that a celebrity version of the new show could be out of the question.

In its heyday, Total Wipeout would pull in more than seven million viewers when it aired on Saturday evenings.

Despite its success, a TV insider previously told Daily Mail that although the game show received “reasonable” ratings, bosses felt it had “served its purpose” after six series.

A spokeswoman for BBC said at the time: “After four very successful series of Total Wipeout, and one series of Winter Wipeout, the BBC has taken the decision that the next series, due for later this year, will be the last.”

The programme was also hit with controversy when two well-known faces sought legal advice over injuries they had sustained while filming the celebrity version of the show.

In addition to this, Joe Swash dislocated his shoulder while on the show and ex-Olympic hurdler Sally Gunnell suffered severe bruising on her thighs.
