Ulrika Jonsson blasts Davina McCall’s new ITV dating show claiming she had idea first

TV personality Ulrika Jonsson has slammed the concept of new dating show, My Mum, Your Dad, and claims she came up with the idea first.

The 56-year-old was far from impressed with the new reality programme hosted by Davina McCall which is scheduled to hit screens on Monday (September 11) on ITV.

Discussing the synopsis, where children play a hand in their parents’ love lives and help to choose a potential match for their mum or dad, Ulrika said the thought of it brings “a shiver down my spine”.

Sharing her thoughts in her Sun column, she wrote: “It suggests that even in our late 40s and 50s, we need our kids to be involved in decisions about our personal lives.

“It sends a signal to the rest of the world that, at a time when we finally get to enjoy and pursue our independence away from family life, it’s still the children who have a say about what we do and who we do it with.”

The mother of four then went on to add that presenter Davina took her idea.

She added: “Davina would have you believe this was her idea. But a dating show for the over-50s was first mooted by me years ago — in this very newspaper.”

Ulrika, who is a mother of four, said her proposal wasn’t to have a copy of Love Island, with “high heels and false eyelashes” however she wanted “something along similar lines because, quite frankly, we need to normalise older bodies and faces that have interesting stories to tell”.

Rounding up her rant, the presenter said although she believe the new ITV show will be successful, she also believes its a “wasted opportunity” and that it feels “patronising and condescending”.

Both ITV and Davina have tried to steer clear of the Love Island theme for My Mum, Your Dad with Davina previously stating that it is very different.

In a synopsis for the new show, ITV has said: “From humorous moments to heartwarming confessions, the kids will see their parents in a whole new light as they are presented with opportunities to select who they’ll be matched with on one-to-one dates, and who may join the family celebrations for years to come.”
