It’s fair to say the music industry has seen plenty of fall-outs over the years.
Some would say it’s even produced some of the best music we’ve heard in decades, with incredible diss tracks sending fans wild. But it was arguably the most explosive time for feuds in showbiz during the 1990s.
The 90s birthed some of the biggest pop groups ever, including the likes of Take That, The Spice Girls, S Club, Oasis and many more. Yet with so many groups dominating the charts, it became a breeding ground for backstage fights.

S Club
‘There ain’t no party like an S Club party’ – until you’re kicked out of the party. Last year, Hannah Spearritt decided to pull out of the reunion tour following the death of her late bandmate Paul Cattermole.
The star was tragically found dead at his home in Dorset on April 6, 2023, at the age of 46. After the death of her former flame, the blonde bombshell decided to leave the group just weeks later, prior to the group’s tour being scheduled to start a few months later.
It was reported at the time that the five remaining members of S Club – Bradley McIntosh, Jo O’Meara, Jon Lee, Rachel Stevens and Tina Barrett – had been told not to speak to Hannah due a rumoured disagreement over her exit. In July, sources claimed Hannah was shocked when she saw her bandmates announcing the tour as a five-piece on social media.
It is understood the singer was unaware the 25th anniversary tour would be going ahead following the loss of their bandmate. She was reportedly left feeling “blindsided” by the announcement and sought legal advice regarding the snub.
An insider claimed there is “little to no chance” of Hannah re-joining the S Club reunion due to the alleged “bad blood” within the group. The source told The Sun in July: “Hannah is devastated.
“She was pushed out, and doesn’t understand why. The rest of S Club has been told not to contact her.”
The insider went on to suggest that Hannah was “binned” after disagreements with S Club creator Simon Fuller. They alleged that while the other band members signed their tour contracts quickly, Hannah “took her time and pushed back on a few details.”
Sadly, the star disappointed fans when she failed to work things out with the group and did not take part on the nationwide reunion tour. It is understood that the relationship between Hannah and Rachel is still frosty after she competed on the ITV skating show one year after the Rise singer.
Oasis v Blur
Arguably two of the biggest bands in the nineties are perhaps more famous for their long-standing feud. Oasis and Blur were at loggerheads thanks to a dramatic love triangle.
The groups locked horns back in 1995 during the now-infamous chart battle after Liam’s brother Noel discovered that Blur’s frontman Damon Albarn, was dating his then girlfriend. Speaking at the time, Noel commented that Liam and Damon’s use of “too much” cocaine could have fuelled their argument between the pair.
He told reporters at the time: “Liam and Damon were s****ing the same bird and there was a lot of cocaine involved. That’s where the germ of it grew.” Meanwhile, Alan McGee – who signed Oasis to Creation Records – reiterated the tense feud between the two groups.
In his autobiography, the music mogul recalled: “There was a situation with a girl. That created the Britpop war. Damon s****ed somebody close to Liam. It was one of many women Damon was friendly with.
“Then he got off with her for a one-night stand and that created the rub. They were all goading each other after that.” Noel has since addressed the long-running feud in his book Don’t Look Back In Anger.
He wrote: “There was an NME award where we f***ing won everything and then we were photographed with Blur, and Liam said, ‘F**k you c***s, blah, blah, blah’. It just escalated from there.
“They’re both singers and singers are f***ing idiots. They’re wired the wrong way round. Once they’ve looked at themselves in the mirror for four hours, what else are they going to do?” The feuding artists have yet to set aside their differences and make amends.
B*Witched v Five
Irish hitmakers B*Witched became known for their angelic looks and catchy tunes at the height of their fame. Meanwhile, Five were known for their bad boy attitudes – and they certainly lived up to these expectations.
Singer Edele Lynch previously revealed how the C’est La Vie singers were once the victims of cruel pranks conducted by the 5IVE lads. The boyband – which consisted at the time of Sean Conlon, Scott Robinson, Abz Love, Ritchie Neville and J Brown.
During an appearance on Vicky Pattison’s The Secret To podcast, Edele gave fans an insight into what it was like between the two groups backstage. She claimed: “They used to be really horrible to us.
“Like we’d be in the dressing rooms next door and they throw their beer over – like the bottles and everything!”
Gary Barlow v Robbie Williams
Although they were once best pals, Take That hitmakers Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow famously locked horns during the peak of their fame. Robbie – who went on to launch a hugely successful solo career – previously claimed he was “forced the quit” the band in 1995 which devastated fans.
Shortly after his explosive exit, Robbie hit back at the Frodsham-born hitmaker by branding him a “clueless w***er”, adding that the band “had all the creativity of mentally unstable morons.”
The band, which was made up of Robbie, Gary, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Howard Donald, reportedly asked the Angels singer to leave after he went AWOL from rehearsals. The star reportedly ditched their rehearsals for a star-studded party with Liam Gallagher.
Thankfully, the group managed to make amends with the dad-of-four, who later admitted: “I was a pathetic, pitiful creature. The first thing I would do in the morning would be to empty the bottle of wine that I had fallen asleep over two hours earlier.
“I’d have taken a like of coke because I couldn’t get up without it.” It appears as though the group have put it all behind them following an “exorcism” like chat in 2018.
Elton John V Madonna
Madonna and Elton John are by far tow of the biggest names in pop music and are famous for their creativity as well as their fiery temper. While the pair appeared to be on friendly terms during a backstage photoshoot at the BRIT Awards in 1995, their feud soon started several years later.
Following the Vogue singer’s 2002 soundtrack for the James Bond movie, Die Another Day, Sir Elton didn’t hold back with his harsh comments. He described the song, which climbed to No3 on the official UK charts as the “worst Bond tune ever”.
But his blistering comments didn’t stop there, despite being a fan of the musician at the time. He went on to say the track would have been better if the likes of “Lulu or Shirley Bassey” had performed the track instead.
This was only the beginning of their lengthy feud. Elton’s claws certainly came out at the 2004 Q Awards. As he accepted his Classic Songwriter Award, he made a frosty dig at the mum-of-four who was nominated for Best Live Act.
As he took to the podium, he said: “Since when has lip-synching been live? Anyone who lip-syncs in public on stage when you pay £75 to see them should be shot.
“That’s me off her Christmas card list, but do I give a toss? No.” Madge’s team later insisted that the singer “does not lip-sync” and reassured fans that Elton “remains on her Christmas card list.”
But all was not what it seemed, when Madonna declined an invite to perform at his bachelor party. When the star was rejected, he branded the blonde bombshell a “miserable cow”. However, years later it appears as though the hitmakers are now best friends again.
During a concert in Nice, France, Madonna dedicated a song to the legendary musician. She told the sold-out crowd: “I’d like to dedicate this next song to a Mr Elton John.
“I know he’s a big fan of it, and I know he’s a big fan of mine. And you know what? I forgive him. Gotta start somewhere.” Elton later discussed how their feud came to an end, before recalling how they bumped into one another at a French restaurant.
He said: “I apologised profusely because what I said should have never appeared in public. She was fantastic. She was just like, ‘Okay, let’s get a move on’.”
Sporty Spice v Liam Gallagher
Liam Gallagher has had his fair share of showbiz feuds over the years, including his ongoing war with his brother Noel. But one feud that may surprise you is with none other than Melanie C AKA Sporty Spice.
While the Wonderwall star is known for his online rants, in 1997 he ignited many of his arguments through the tabloids. And he didn’t hold back as he discussed the Spice Girls’ growing fame.
During the 1997 BRIT Awards, he and his Oasis bandmates were nominated for several awards, including British Single of the Year for their stellar single Don’t Look Back In Anger. That same year, the Spice Girls had been nominated for Best British Group, Best British Newcomer, Best British Video and Best British Single.
Despite the band being nominated, Liam famously said he wouldn’t attending the event because he would “smack them” if he bumped into the girl group. Things soon heated up when the Wannabe singers collected an award on stage.
As they stepped up to the podium, Mel yelled over the mic: “Come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough.” It is not yet known if the group have ever resolved their feud.
