Bargain Hunt’s red team were left “heartbroken” after taking a massive £90 hit in the competition — but still claimed the victory over their competitors.
Jenny and Caitlyn were playing for the red team on today’s episode (Jan 18) on BBC One and were tasked with finding bargain buys to take to auction in Ardingly in West Sussex. But as usual each team was given a challenge to find a themed buy at the antiques dealers, under the guidance of their experts — David Harper and Raj Bisram.
The reds teamed up with Raj to complete their task to “find an item from the Arts and Crafts era” and thought they had found success in a silver broach with a large blue stone in the centre. But while the item was styled to pay homage to that period of time, it wasn’t actually from back then and resulted in them taking a pentalty for the cost.

Presenter Natasha Raskin Sharp took the team’s items to auctioneer Thomas Forester in Newbury to get his opinion on it before it went under the hammer. “I think this is post-war,” he said.
Natasha agreed, adding: “It’s arts and crafts style — inspired by, maybe to pay homage to — but not from that period. So, I am loathed to do it but I think I’ll have to disqualify the item.” To which, Tom replied: “I think you’re quite right in doing that.”
The host then informed him that the item would incurr a penalty at the amount of the price they paid — leaving them £90 down from the off. However, Tom thought the item would have made a loss at auction anyway, with an estimate of £40 to £60.
At auction, Jenny said she was “heartbroken” that the broach had been disqualified. However, the item did do worse than the reds had hoped. The winning bidder purchased the piece for £20 — meaning the item would have been a loss either way.
But luck was on their side with their other items and Raj’s bonus buy. Their profits pushed them out of the negative zone. “Raj’s bonus by swept in and a huge profit for the reds,” Natasha said. “They went from a minus to a plus, which means that today’s winners are the reds. Excellent reds! You finish on plus £60.”
The pair were asked what they were going to do with their winnings. Caitlyn explained that she would be donating the £60 to Macmillan Cancer Trust as part of her sponsored marathon. She had previously shaved her head and raised £1,800 for the charity.
