BBC Breakfast host ‘in trouble’ as Carol Kirkwood hits out after racy ‘leather’ blunder

BBC Breakfast was thrown into chaos on Monday morning (January 22) after host Jon Kay made an accidental remark about his co-star Carol Kirkwood.

Kay, 54, was presenting the BBC morning news show together with co-host Sally Nugent. As the show returned to our screens, Storm Isha continued to dominate the headlines.

The storm has caused immense damage to homes and caused travel disruption up and down the country. A yellow wind warning was issued for the entire UK due to the poor conditions and strong winds.

The show then cut to correspondents in Blackpool and Glasgow to assess the damage caused to homes and the travel disruption as the country continues to be battered by the weather front. Whilst standing in Glasgow’s Central station, one reporter told of a flight from Tenerife bound for Glasgow ending up in Köln in Germany.

Jon and Sally were hosting the first BBC Breakfast of the week

As the pair ended the segment and moved on to other news, Jon reassured viewers that the show would be giving vital updates throughout the show. However, a mix-up in his words accidentally meant that he insinuated weather presenter Carol Kirkwood would be doing so in a racy manner.

“If you’ve got bad weather where you live or you’re impacting, do let us know,” Jon said. “Carol will have the very leather–” he added before realising his mistake.

“Latest weather, not leather!” he continued, as co-host Sally Nugent erupted into laughter. As Jon crossed to Sally for the rest of the day’s headlines, Nugent warned Kay: “That’ll get us all into trouble, Jon!”

Carol herself was left red-faced at Jon’s suggestions

Later on in the programme, presenter Carol gave her all-important weather forecast to project the next band of rain and wind. But as she ended her forecast, she quipped to her co-hosts that she could not believe Jon had misled the public.

As Jon asked “How’s the leather forecast too?” Carol put her hand on her hips and hit back: “Yes, I heard you had said I was going to present the weather in leather this morning.”

Jon had the team cracking up after his awkward mishap

Kay backed down and said that was not the phrase he said; however Sally admitted that it would bring in extra viewers. “There are lots of men agreeing with him, I think!” Sally quipped, leaving Carol red-faced at the idea.

Jon shot back and piled onto the thought, adding: “Ratings would go through the roof!” As the hosting duo steadied themselves for the next part of the programme, they joked: “The news is, there’s not a lot of leather around, but there is a lot of weather.”

BBC Breakfast airs every day at 6am on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer.
