BBC Breakfast’s Ben Thompson left to host solo as co-host Luxmy Gopal abandons set

The weekend scene on BBC Breakfast got viewers chattering as Ben Thompson was left to steer the ship solo, minus a sidekick on the famous red sofa.

Flying solo with just a couple of field reporters for company, such as Sarah Rogers reporting from Southport about a tribute event and weather ace Sarah Keith-Lucas giving her forecasts, Ben had to keep his cool while running the show pretty much single-handedly.

The absence of Luxmy Gopal, who normally shares presenting duties at weekends, didn’t go unnoticed by eagle-eyed fans. They took straight to social media to air their curiosity about the unusual setup.

On Twitter, one puzzled viewer popped the question: “How come there’s no [woman] on the sofa today? Sunday should be a Luxmy day!”

Echoing the sentiment, another chimed in: “Missus just wondered why is there only one presenter on Sunday’s BBC Breakfast but two during weekdays?” Speculation buzzed over whether the change was down to holidays, sick leave or perhaps reactions to various presenting teams, reports the Mirror.

This shake-up aligns with some recent timetable juggling amidst the last few weeks, with the BBC Olympics festivities hijacking BBC One’s usual morning slot from 8 am an hour shy of when Breakfast usually concludes.

While weekday mornings have seen Breakfast hopping over to BBC Two to finish its final hour, the weekend editions have faced a complete blackout, leaving regular watchers a bit out to dry.

Fans were up in arms after their favourite show was switched channels on August 3, with folks taking to Twitter in confusion: “Oy, what’s going on thought we turn over to BBC Two dear lord!”

One befuddled fan tweeted: “I thought this, is it different on weekends?” which was met with the reply: “It’s the Olympics, but I suppose tomorrow will be the same. No wonder Naga [Munchetty] didn’t show up!”

The drama didn’t stop there; Saturday saw Charlie Stayt awkwardly left out in the cold by his co-host Rachel Burden during a cringe-worthy health segment. They touched on Aerosmith cancelling their tour due to lead singer Steven Tyler’s vocal cord issues, and following the band’s hit ‘I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing’, Charlie’s cheeky jibe about Rachel singing along was shut down with her blunt retort: “Erm. Mumbling along. Yeah…”

Cue an icy atmosphere, with Charlie swiftly defusing the tension by roping in weather presenter Sarah Keith-Lucas for a lighter topic.
