BBC Breakfast’s Carol Kirkwood has ‘had a few comments’ over age-gap romance with hubby

BBC Breakfast’s weather expert Carol Kirkwood has finally addressed her age-gap relationship with her husband Steve – admitting she’s “had a few comments”.

The 62-year-old meteorologist started dating her police officer husband Steve Randall around seven years ago – and Steve is just 48, giving them an age-gap of 14 years. The pair finally walked down the aisle in December 2023 after Carol announced her engagement live on BBC Breakfast.

The pair enjoyed a “small intimate wedding” after Carol’s split from her first husband Jimmy Kirkwood in 2008 – the pair originally tied the knot in 1990, but Carol said their romance “ran its course”.

Now Carol has opened up to the Daily Express about her marriage, admitting that she “doesn’t care” about what others think. She said: “If our ages were the other way around, nobody would ever mention it. I’ve had a few comments but I don’t care.

“We’ve moved on from the days when he might have been described as my toyboy or people might call me a cougar. We’re happy together and that’s all that matters.”

She described Steve as “kind, intelligent and handsome”, adding: “He makes me laugh.” She admitted she “wouldn’t change a thing” about their wedding day and branded it the “best thing [she] ever did”.

In the same interview, Carol opened up about not being able to conceive children while still married to her first husband Jimmy. In a heartfelt confession, she admitted: “I’d wanted to be a mum since I was a child. And we tried everything. But it just never happened and nor could anyone tell us why. But I’ve got lots of nieces and nephews who I adore.”

She previously gushed to Prima Magazine of her love life: “He always makes me a cup of tea before I go to work in the morning, which is very romantic – it’s 2.45am and he often leaves me a little love note for when I come home from work. That, to me, is worth a million red roses.”

Both Carol and Steve have been married once before

Carol tends to keep most of the deets about her relationship on the down-low, but she did gush over her wedding day on BBC Breakfast. She told her co-stars: “I cannot tell you how fabulous it’s been! I would not change a thing about the day. It was very small as well and intimate, so you didn’t have to worry that Auntie Nelly didn’t have a glass of sherry in her hand! It was brilliant.”

Steve, like Carol, has also been married once before, and welcomed one child with his ex-wife Nichola Randall. The pair split in 2017. Away from his work as a police officer, Steve is a dedicated runner and has taken part in various marathons, including the Marathon Des Sables through the Moroccan desert – a route described as the “toughest foot race in the world”.
