BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty says ‘medics are on their way’ after co-star’s injury on air

BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty was left in stitches after her co-star suffered an unfortunate injury live on air.

During Friday’s visit (May 10) to the BBC studios, the 49-year-old broadcaster welcomed viewers back to the programme alongside her co-host Charlie Stayt. The dynamic duo discussed some of the biggest stories hitting the headlines.

This included the protests that took place during the Eurovision semi-finals, the rise in cases of whooping cough, and the announcement that the UK has finally pulled out of the recession. Later on in the show, the pair welcomed meteorologist Simon King onto the show to share the latest weather report.

Naga began the segment by prefacing that despite the glorious weather the UK has had this week, the BBC Breakfast team cannot enjoy the weather because they are hard at work. She joked: “I tell you what else is a crowd pleaser, the idea of laying out in the sun, chilling out, catching some rays.

“I mean obviously we can’t do it because we’re working as all of the BBC Breakfast team does. We work really hard and are committed to bringing you the day’s news.” It was at this point that the camera panned over to the weatherman in the heart of the Blue Peter gardens in Salford.

He was seen soaking up the glorious sun as he relaxed in a deckchair with a pair of sunglasses on. Naga took a cheeky swipe at her co-star as she added: “Oh, well most of us are!”

The weather reporter was all smiles as the sounds of seagulls calling and an ice cream van could be heard in the background. At the end of the weather report, Charlie asked the presenter if he could collapse and erect the tradition deck chair on his own without assistance.

Charlie explained: “I question whether he put the deckchair up himself because you know sometimes people get into a pickle with that kind of thing. He didn’t did he?”

Simon confirmed he didn’t but was more than up for the challenge, and started to break down the chair. As he began to dismantle it, Naga warned him to be careful not to hurt his fingers.

But the presenter failed to heed her warning and ultimately slammed his fingers in the deckchair before he fixed it again. Naga could be heard hysterically laughing in the background as Simon shook his fingers in pain before he sat back down again.

Naga chuckled: “I shouldn’t laugh but it happens every time. He managed to collapse it and put it back together again and hurt his fingers, I knew it would happen.”

Charlie chuckled: “The first aid team are on their way” as Naga agreed: “The medics are on their way”. Thankfully, Simon managed to laugh off the on air blunder and could be seen giggling in the background before they moved on to the next segment.

BBC Breakfast airs on weekdays from 6am on BBC One or catch up on BBC iPlayer.
