Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star spills on ‘really nervous’ reaction to classic film

Jenna Ortega spilled the beans on her eerie experience with a “drunk Beetlejuice” at a Halloween bash that left her petrified. The 21-year-old actress, who’s starring in the upcoming flick Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, opened up to CNN about her childhood fears: “I saw the movie when I was about nine or ten at a friend’s house.

“I remember sweating a lot because I saw a drunk Beetlejuice costume when I was, like, six years old at a Halloween costume party and he terrified me. It was really bad make-up. He was doing shots in the corner and had the make-up dripping down his neck. The green wig… it looked insane.

“So then my friend turned the movie on and I saw who it was and it took me right back. It made me really nervous watching it for the first time.”

Back in August, Jenna confessed to BuzzFeed that she became unexpectedly bashful upon meeting Michael Keaton, her co-star in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, saying: “I have been such a fan of Michael Keaton for such a long time that I think actually seeing him in person, I actually went inside myself because… I weirdly got shy. But he’s so sweet, he’s so funny, so charming, so professional. I feel like I learned so much by even watching him.”

Jenna was totally blown away by Michael’s jaw-dropping transformation into the iconic Beetlejuice, gushing: “It was so strange to see him become Beetlejuice because he was unrecognisable. It was the first time I’d ever seen someone completely disappear – no bit of themselves involved. So that was pretty special”, reports the Mirror.

The much-anticipated sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, sees the return of original stars Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara, with fresh faces Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe joining the spooky shenanigans, all under the masterful direction of Tim Burton.

Fast forward 36 years from the original mayhem, the new flick kicks off with a bang as: “36 years after the events of Beetlejuice, the Deetz family returns home to Winter River after Charles Deetz’s unexpected death.”

Cue the drama when Lydia’s world is thrown into disarray as her daughter Astrid encounters the notorious model town in the attic, unwittingly opening a portal to the Afterlife and setting the mischievous Beetlejuice free once more.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice releases in UK cinemas on Friday, September 6.
