The creator of hit comedy Benidorm has ruled out a movie version of the beloved TV sitcom.
The series about staff and holiday makers and staff at the Solana all-inclusive hotel in Benidorm, Spain has been a huge hit with viewers, and there have whisperings about a film version since it ended in 2018. However, it seems Derren Litten – who wrote and appeared in the show – doesn’t think it would work on the big screen.
Show star Jake Canuso, who played barman Mateo on the series, told the Daily Star: “There are lots of rumours there will be a film, but Derren doesn’t want to do one, ever. He doesn’t think it would work. It would just be a long episode.”

He went on: “The cinema world is very different to TV. People don’t really go to the cinema. They have Netflix and Amazon now. They want to see Benidorm on their TVs.”
“So I don’t think there will be a film or another series,” said the star. “There is so much you can do and how many characters you can change.”
Derren’s decision to rule out a film ends years of speculation that one would happen at some point – and will undoubtedly disappoint fans.
Just weeks ago, former star Sherrie Hewson called for it to happen, suggesting that she would be “up” for it. The actress, who played Joyce Temple-Savage for six series, said that she thought it would be “very funny”.
“It would make a film, I think, and you could bring people from everywhere, that have ever been on Benidorm, and their stories back together,” she said during an appearance on ITV’s Good Morning Britain.
“I think it would be brilliant, and it would be two-and-a-half hours as opposed to half-an-hour. I think it would be very funny. So that’s what I’m up for.”
Benidorm ran for 10 series on ITV between 2007 and 2018 and had a starry cast, including the likes of Steve Pemberton, Siobhan Finneran and Sheridan Smith. It was so successful that it won a string of top accolades, including National Television Awards and TV Choice trophies.
The series also spawned a stage version called Benidorm Live.
