Benidorm’s Madge star Sheila Reid is best known for her signature tanned look on the show – but she looks worlds apart from the ITV granny in these throwback snaps.
Sheila plays Madge on the show, who is the cantankerous mother of Janice Garvey, and known for her sharp-tongue and sun-worshipping attitude. The character is rarely seen without a cigarette in hand and drives around the resort on her electric scooter.
The hit ITV show ran from 2007 to 2018 and followed holidaymakers and staff at the Solana Hotel in Benidorm every year and Madge was one of the most memorable characters.

However, the actress, 86, looks worlds away from her famous character in some unearthed snaps from early in her career. Though she revealed she didn’t always look as glamorous as she does in the pics.
Talking to the Stratford-upon-Avon Herald, Sheila said: “I got the acting bug I think because I’ve always been small; and I was very fat, I had crooked teeth that crossed over at the front… and I used to just live in the world of make-believe because I wasn’t terribly keen on who I was.
“It was interesting because with acting I would play character roles, and where there were roles where you were playing yourself I found that the hardest thing of all – because I would have to strip it all away and be me.
“I have an older sister and a younger brother, they weren’t interested in the arts at all but I used to drag them all in to do plays in front of my parents and relatives; I was writer, director and of course the star.”
She began acting in 1960 when she starred in the ITV anthology series Armchair Theatre. The actress also racked up some other TV credits in titles such as Tales Of Mystery and Love Story and BBC drama series Z Cars.
The actress has most recently appeared in shows such as Casualty, Doctors and The Bad Education Movie with Jack Whitehall.
