Britain’s ugliest dog lands major Hollywood movie role as Ryan Reynolds’s furry friend

Britain’s ugliest mutt has been cast in the new Deadpool film.

Eyesore pooch Peggy will star as Dogpool, Wade Wilson’s four-legged friend. The unsightly furball, believed to be a pug and Chinese crested cross, won the ugliest dog accolade last year.

She belongs to Holly Middleton, from Leven in East Yorkshire, who was thrilled when her beastly mongrel was recruited for the Deadpool & Wolverine movie. Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, told Empire magazine: “It’s love at first sight. He loves Dogpool. She feels like the animal manifestation of Wade Wilson.”

Peggy, who has almost 75,000 Instagram followers, finished filming at the end of January and celebrated with a nap. Photos taken during shooting in the south of England show the pug cross dressed in her costume with Ryan and Holly.

A trailer for the Marvel movie also shows Dogpool giving Deadpool a slobbery kiss as Wolverine looks on in disgust. Last year Holly told the BBC: “We tend to forget Peggy isn’t your standard looking dog and we are very aware some people would refer to Peggy as ugly. It’s always in a humorous way and we don’t take offence, and neither does she.

“Some people find Peggy’s unusual appearance strange, and in rare cases off-putting. “Despite Peggy winning the ugliest dog in the UK title, we think she is beautiful both inside and out, and wouldn’t change her for the world.” Movie producers relocated filming to the UK so Reynolds could manage his commitments to his team Wrexham FC.

In the third film, Deadpool will use Cable’s time travel machine to save Wolverine before his death in 2029 and they will end up lost in the Multiverse. The Crown’s Emma Corrin is also set to star in the film, in which she will play a villain and Jennifer Garner is reprising her role as assassin, Elektra. It is set for release on July 26.
