Chris Packham admits he’d love to become a bird so he can steal ‘sandwiches and scones’

Chris Packham has admitted he would love to become a bird.

The naturalist, 63, reckons it would be great to live as a “smart” jackdaw – a type of crow. And his dream would be to fly around Corfe Castle in Dorset, nicking people’s lunches.

The TV presenter, inset, said: “In the jackdaw population there are groups of male jackdaws that never breed. Essentially they just sort of have a bachelor’s life without any of the encumbrance of responsibility.

“And there’s always a nice jackdaw population on Corfe Castle, which is one of the most attractive ruined castles in the UK.”

Chris would swoop on “sandwiches and scones” of visitors enjoying “a cream tea”. He is also up for becoming a speedy falcon because he reckons it would be an exciting life.

He added: “Everyone would love to be something fast and dashing. It would be quite fun to be a peregrine falcon for a few minutes and be stooping at more than 100 miles an hour. That’d be quite a thrill.”

The Springwatch star admitted he found working on TV overwhelming and created a “scream room” in his head so he did not have a complete meltdown. The naturalist said he struggled with his autism when he landed a job hosting the BBC’s The Really Wild show in 1986.

“It was overwhelming,’’ he told Living With Disability magazine. “I had to somehow stay calm and in control in a big building, with lots of people around.

“I had to curb my inclination to constantly interrupt in meetings, things most people with autism find difficult. The night before a show I would list on the back of the programme script what I needed to do and what I shouldn’t do in order to get through the day.

“And in my head I created a ‘scream room’, a virtual space I could go to, to avoid conflict or a complete meltdown.’’ The presenter’s new series of Springwatch starts on Monday at 8pm on BBC Two.
