Coronation Street exit storyline exposed as one character set to leave ITV cobbles

Coronation Street revealed one character’s sudden exit storyline as the beloved Weatherfield resident planned to leave the ITV cobbles for a lavish trip to Italy.

During Monday (January 16) night’s episode, Tyrone Dobbs told Evelyn Plummer that his wife Fiz is attending a course in Italy and has invited him to fly out with her. Despite jumping at the chance to fly out, the mechanic wouldn’t dare leave the girls with his long-lost mum Cassie for a fortnight.

Later on in the episode, Evelyn tells Roy Cropper that she will be moving back into No.9, suggesting that she may agree to watch the children while Tyrone goes to Italy. Towards the end of the episode, her decision to move back in was final as she shared the news to her surprised grandson.

At first, Tyrone was completely confused when his boss, Kevin Webster, grilled him about wanting to take time off work. It was at this point that his scheming grandmother revealed she was behind the cheeky move.

She confessed that Fiz was already booking the flights out to Italy and she had already started to move over her things to help Cassie with the girls. Evelyn insisted Tyrone deserved a break, leaving him delighted as he gushed: “I better get packing!

“Hey Nan, what do people even wear in Italy?” The news comes after it was revealed last year that Alan Halsall, who plays the trusty mechanic, would be taking a break from the soap after going under the knife for a major knee operation.

The actor, 41, revealed back in November that he had reconstructive surgery on his ACL ligament, which had gone “really well”. Sharing a picture of his strapped-up limb on Instagram at the time, he reassured fans that he was recovering well.

He wrote: “On Friday I underwent ACL reconstruction surgery. I have been told the surgery went really well. I know I have a long 9-12 months of rehabilitation ahead of me but I’m sure with the support of family and friends I’ll get there.”

At the time, a Coronation Street spokesperson said Tyrone would remain on screen for the rest of the year but he would disappear shortly after ringing in 2024. They explained: “Alan will be on screen in the coming weeks as we film two months ahead, and then he’ll be taking a short break whilst he recovers.”

With Alan’s character Tyrone appearing to be jetting out to Italy on Monday, it’s likely that this will be his character’s temporary exit storyline from the hit ITV soap. It comes after Fiz’s return was teased as actress Jennie McAlpine was pictured on the cobbles on Thursday (January 11).

Taking to Instagram, both Claire Sweeney who plays Cassie and Alan who plays Tyrone shared a lovely on-screen family snap with the auburn beauty snuggled between them. Claire, 52, wrote: “So good to meet my daughter-in-law today @alanhalsall lovely Jennie McAlpine [heart emoji] Fiz.”

Meanwhile, Alan penned: “Family is the heart of the home [heart emoji]. No.9 @coronationstreet, Jen’s back. So happy to be together again & back to work.” Coronation Street’s official Instagram replied to the sweet snap, writing: “Love this! Welcome back Jen [heart emoji].”

Loyal fans of the ITV soap will remember that Fiz left for Norwich last year and hasn’t been seen on screen since May. In real life, actress Jennie, 39, went on maternity leave and welcomed her third child with husband Chris Farr in April 2023, an adorable baby daughter called Doris.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV1 from 8pm or catch up on ITVX.
