Coronation Street fans have voiced their disdain at producers after they branded an actor’s ‘replacement’ as “disrespectful”.
On Monday (May 13), it was revealed that Hollyoaks heartthrob Jacob Roberts would be debuting in the ITV soap. He was to take on the role as police detective, Christopher Green as part of an ongoing storyline involving Bernie Winter.
Much to the shock of the nation, it was revealed that Christopher – or, as he likes to be called, Kit – was actually the long-lost son of Bernie. However, Bernie has yet to discover she is incredibly close to her own son once again.

It had been revealed that when she was younger, she felt she was unable to look after her newborn baby and thus gave the baby – which she had named Zodiac – up for adoption. The child was eventually taken on and given the name Christopher.
In recent scenes, Bernie has been on the lookout to find her long-lost son, as she grapples with the gradual loss of her other son Paul. In one heart-breaking scene, she paid a visit to a man who had the same name in the hopes of finding him, only to have her hopes dashed as he denied being the man she was looking for.
But as Bernie left the show, it was in fact revealed that Kit was indeed her and according to inside information, the pair are set to meet again very soon. All of this comes whilst Paul continues to battle against motor neuron disease (MND).
Paul, who has been a staple of the show since 2018, has been slowly taking on the condition as it renders him immobile. Fans of the show have been in floods of tears as he struggles to accept his fate, eventually requiring to use an electric wheelchair and having a feeding tube fitted later this week.
But whilst some fans are devastated at Paul’s worsening conditions, other fans are not happy that Bernie’s new plot is have a new son to fawn over. One outraged fan wrote: “Is it just me who thinks this is really bad and a little disrespectful timing because Paul is about to die and now they’re bringing in a secret son for Bernie.”
A second user echoed the sentiment, penning: “Replacing Paul immediately, wow.” Whilst a third viewer said: “It feels like Bernie is already looking for a replacement son.”
Teasing the details of his new character, Jacob – who played the role of Damon Kinsella in Hollyoaks – said that he believes that Kit will be “very misunderstood” by fans at first.
“He’s been really hurt throughout his life and although he has a good heart,” he said. “He has some deep rooted resentment with his biological mum, which will be really interesting to play out.”
