Corrie’s Brooke Vincent opens up on ‘one-trick pony’ fears after career U-turn

Coronation Street star Brooke Vincent has said she feared people would dub her a “one-trick pony” in her acting career.

Vincent, 31, is best known to the public for playing the loveable Sophie Webster. Having played the character for 15 years, Brooke made the brave decision to leave the show back in 2019 in favour of new pastures.

But in a recent episode of ITV reality show Drama Queens, the actress admitted that after leaving the show, she felt that her confidence had taken a hit. Speaking to her former co-star Lucy Fallon, who plays Bethany Platt on the show, she opened up on how her anxieties had played.

Tucking into a lunch date with her good pal Lucy, Brooke said: “I give off that I’m quite confident. Probably that’s when I’m least confident; when I’ve got to be exposed, and also be judged.

“Because what if I am a one-trick pony?” she added. “What if Sophie Webster is the only thing I can do? Who knows?”

Fallon, who recently returned to the show as Bethany following a three-year break from the soap, was quick to shower some love onto Brooke. She added that she was valued as an actress in the intimate moment between the two, but Brooke did not feel so sure.

Vincent shot to fame back in 2004, when aged just 11 she landed the role of Sophie on the much-loved soap. During her stint on the show, Sophie was involved in a number of personal storylines, including her journey to Christianity, and her discovery of being a lesbian.

She also was involved in a serious car crash that nearly killed the character. As well as this, she also nearly made history by having the first lesbian wedding on a British soap to doting partner Sian Powers – before Sian left her at the altar.

In 2019, Brooke made the decision to leave the show to go on maternity leave and look after her family. Since then, she has welcomed two beautiful children into the world with her footballing fiancé Kean Bryan.

Vincent is continuing to act in different projects, as she takes on a new role on the stage performing in Kay Mellor’s The Syndicate. However, in a previous episode of Drama Queens, which follows the lives of some of the UK’s biggest soap stars, she admitted she felt guilty leaving her children to work.

“Mum guilt is a thing, it really, really is,” she said candidly. “Do I just go and work in a job that is 9-5, that’s round the corner from home, and just solely be a mum? I don’t know what the right answer is, to be honest.”
