Corrie’s new boss on ‘devastating’ news that soap icon quit – and the rule for exit storyline

Coronation Street’s new head honcho Kate Brooks has spilled the beans on a soap icon’s shock exit from the ITV favourite.

Veteran actress Helen Worth, 73, has announced she’s bowing out of the long-standing serial drama this June, declaring it the “perfect time” to say goodbye. Helen first graced our screens in 1974 as Gail Platt, quickly cementing her status as a Weatherfield treasure.

The soap stalwart wrapped up filming earlier this month, with her dramatic departure set to shake the festive season in Weatherfield. Unsurprisingly, the news has left fans reeling, and Corrie’s fresh-faced boss is no exception.

Chatting with Plymouth Live and other media outlets, Kate Brooks dished the dirt on what viewers can expect from the cobbles this Christmas – promising a “very fun” and “really lively” season, but with a side serving of explosive revelations.

Kate also hinted at a potential wedding for Gail Platt and Jesse Chadwick (played by John Thomson), but kept schtum on whether Gail will actually make it down the aisle, teasing: “Whether she goes through with that or not, I cannot tell anything.”, reports Plymouth Live.

Moreover, the new gaffer confessed her heartache over Gail’s departure, saying: “I’m devastated that Gail is leaving. It really devastates me. She’s such an icon. That word gets thrown around a lot, but we’re talking about Gail here! She’s been part of the street for fifty years, we’ve literally watched her grow up.”

Kate Garraway revealed details about Gail’s departure from the street, emphasizing: “It was really important to make sure her exit and departure felt really fitting and in keeping with who she is as a character.”

When chatting about her own June adieu, Helen Flanagan expressed: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.”

She added: “I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding. I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew.”

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
