Dave Myers memorial ride sets off as thousands of cyclists pay tribute to Hairy Biker

Thousands of motorcyclists have hit the road from London to Cumbria in memory of the late Hairy Biker star, Dave Myers.

The beloved TV chef, and one half of the motorcycling duo, died in February at the age of 66. The star was diagnosed with cancer back in May 2022 and sadly lost his battle with the deadly disease two years later.

On Saturday (June 8), more than 20,000 bikers begin the 290-mile journey from the capital to Myer’s costal hometown of Barrow-in-Furness in his memory. The 25km (16 mile) remembrance procession was fronted by his co-star Si King for the charity event, Dave’s Day.

BBC Breakfast were reporting live from the event and saw Si greeting the bikers who could be seen wearing Hawaiin shirts in north-west London. He gushed: “Everybody’s got that lovely Dave sartorial elegance about them, i.e a dodgy shirt.

“Some of them have had them specially printed, it’s remarkable. I mean, you wouldn’t buy a second-hand car from them, would you?

“It’s a celebration of my best friend that we’ve lost. And, yeah, it is very emotional. You never know how these things are going impact you, you know, it is a celebration of Dave’s life.

“That’s why we’re here because he was so irritatingly positive all of the time. And we love him and that’s why we’re here.” He also said that cancer is a “ruthless disease”, adding that it “doesn’t care who it takes. And that’s part of the reason that we’re here.”

“Thank you. You’ve made David Myers very proud,” he added as the audience cheered in response. Before the group set off, Myers’ widow Lili told viewers how much it meant to her that they came to the event.

She told viewers: “Dave was always a Barrowian in his heart, he loved Barrow and he wanted to put Barrow on the map. And today, beyond hid grave, he’s done it again.

“We have people coming from all over the country. We have people coming from Texas, from Malaysia, from all over Europe. It’s endearing. It just helps me go through the process of grief.

“Because it just makes me feel that I’m not on my own with all this. He always cooked, that was his territory. I wasn’t allowed in the kitchen, just to clean the kitchen, and I tell you, he would cook for an hour, I will clean for two.

“He knew how to create a moment. That was his forte.” Keni Carrington, 70, who travelled from France is joining the ride to Barrow and told the BBC her husband of 35 years – who was also a biker – died last June following his cancer diagnosis.
