Deadpool & Wolverine branded ‘gory, gooey’ and ‘massively satisfying’ as first reviews drop

Deadpool & Wolverine, which is Marvel’s first-ever R-rated movie, premiered in New York yesterday – and critics have already been singing the new superhero film’s praises.

The action flick, which stars Hollywood A-listers Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, is the third instalment in the Deadpool franchise.

The film is tracking for a massive $165 million-plus domestic bow when it opens this weekend, which would be the biggest-ever opening of an R-rated picture, according to the Hollywood Reporter,

Shawn Levy directs the new feature, while the script was co-written by Levy, Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and Zeb Wells.

Emma Corrin, known for playing Princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crown, stars as the movie’s main antagonist, while Logan actress Dafne Keen will also return to the cinematic universe after playing Wolverine’s daughter, Laura, in 2017.

The film’s synopsis from IMDB simply reads: “Wolverine is recovering from his injuries when he crosses paths with the loudmouth Deadpool. They team up to defeat a common enemy.”

Taking to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, critics lucky enough to get an early screening of the movie shared their thoughts.

Editor-in-chief of the entertainment awards website Next Best Picture Matt Neglia wrote: “DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE is the shot in the arm the MCU so desperately needed. Vulgar, violent, scathing, and at times, even touching, this R-rated romp holds nothing back delivering on everything its fans want with maximum effort.” (sic)

Awards Radar’s Joey Magidson shared: “Deadpool & Wolverine is so much fun. Marvel absolutely threw me a curveball by making this a tribute to the Fox superheroes, but it plays super well. Funny, gory, and massively satisfying. A blast that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Well done.”

While the Hollywood Handle tweeted: “#DeadpoolAndWolverine is as exciting as you’re expecting it to be. It manages to have the same tone as the previous films with super funny jokes and a story that will have you laughing and crying.

“Hugh Jackman delivers one of his best performances as Wolverine and the film is packed with great surprises that thankfully don’t affect the course of the story.” (sic)

Deadpool & Wolverine is Marvel’s first X-rated feature

Critic James Preston Poole opined: “DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE feels miraculous. A high energy ode to superhero cinema past that goes beyond nostalgia into kid in a candy store madness, the Ryan Reynolds/Hugh Jackman is everything you wanted and more, despite some grating toilet humor.” (sic)

Wong Updates posted: “#DeadpoolandWolverine is No Way Home on STEROIDS. It takes elements from Boss Baby and Come and See to create a beautiful love letter to cinema. Shawn Levy is a true auteur putting him in the ranks with Zack Snyder and Wes Anderson. Cinema is back baby!”

While Atom shared: “Marvel GAMECHANGER! EPIC return. Their chemistry delivers the GREATEST bromance/buddy cop dynamic in film history. Stunning action & hugh loads of gooey fun. Not just another sequel, it’s the BEST MCU movie ever! A fitting end setting up what’s next.” (sic)

Geekcentric’s Justin Lawrence added: “Caught 40 mins of #DeadpoolAndWolverine last week, and it’s not just fan service—it’s a Marvel love letter! Hugh and Ryan are like chimichangas and tequila, the PERFECT combo. This ultimate team-up will have you screaming, “LFG!” Get ready—this movie is going to BLOW YOUR MINDS!” (sic)

Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in UK cinemas on 25 July.
