Demi Moore ’s new movie is so stomach-churning that cinema-goers are apparently walking out.
The Hollywood beauty is back on the big screen in The Substance, playing a fading star called Elisabeth Sparkle who injects herself with a special serum that creates a younger version of herself. Things go terribly wrong, with gory scenes as her younger self (Margaret Qualley) gets out of control.
Fans and critics are all raving about the movie and Demi’s startling performance, with the Radio Times noting that she is “horribly good in what could be the role of her career”. But on the flip side, not everyone can sit through some of the grisly scenes.

Some have been posting messages on social media saying that they couldn’t sit through it and saw other people leaving before the end. One posted on X: “Went to see TheSubstance last night and we had to walkout for the last hour. Just too gory for me! Seeing where the rest of the plot went I think it was the right call…”
“The final 20 mins of The Substance saw my screening literally screaming with one woman having to leave as it was too much!” said someone else. “When credits rolled I saw her in the foyer with a glass of water doing deep breathing haha!”
“Never in my life seen so many people walkout of a theater lmao,” remarked another viewer.
Others said the movie – which was directed by Coralie Fargeat – left them wanting to throw up. “Watching The Substance and it actually makes me want to be sick,” said one person on X.
Another shared: “My date wouldn’t let me drive him home after The Substance because ‘we haven’t been seeing each other long enough’ for him to throw up in front of me. He literally just walked home in the rain to vomit with dignity. Five star movie.”
“Just watched The Substance, everybody’s so creative, I’ve never watched a movie that made me almost throw up,” one fan said.
Another person penned: “Just home from @TryTheSubstance Oh. My. GOD…. What in the David Cronenberg of carnage did I just watch! It’s horrific, sick, twisted & gory, yet somehow also thought provoking, captivating, eye opening & even funny, Demi Moore is astounding! Just WOW!”
