EastEnders’ Charlie Brooks has teased her return to the BBC One soap.
The actress has played the role of Janine Butcher on and off since 1999. And it’s fair to say Janine has become one of the soap’s most iconic villains.
Not to mention she’s been a part of some iconic storylines – from famously killing husband Barry Evans (Shaun Williamson) back in 2004 by pushing him off a cliff, to her legendary feud with Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner).

The last time Janine was seen on the soap was back in 2022. She ended up getting arrested for perverting the course of justice shortly after Mick Carter’s (Danny Dyer) disappearance.
After framing Linda (Kellie Bright) for a car accident which almost killed her infant daughter, Janine began a relationship with Linda’s estranged husband Mick (Danny Dyer). However, Janine’s scheming ways caught up to her and the truth came out on Christmas Day.
Janine ended up stealing a car and was chased down by Mick and Linda. The dramatic scenes resulted in Janine’s car plummeting off a cliff with her and Linda inside.
Mick jumped into the water and managed to rescue the two women but is now presumed dead as his body was never found. Janine was whisked away to jail for a five-year sentence.
What’s more, pregnant with Mick’s child at the time, it was revealed Janine gave birth to a baby boy in prison in June 2023. However, two years on and actress Charlie has now teased her return. But it appears there is a problem when it comes to her making her a comeback.
Speaking to Metro, Charlie was quizzed on whether fans can expect Janine to return in 2028 – the end of the character’s jail sentence. Charlie replied: “I have no idea.”
She then went on to point out how the nation’s TV habits are very different these days – and even mused whether soaps will still be around in the future.
Charlie explained: “I don’t know if the soaps will still be around in five year’s time – who knows what will happen? I think people are watching TV very differently these days.
“But I always say ‘never say never’ with Janine. EastEnders has been a blessing for me, it was my training ground and I love going back there,” she added.
Since her last exit from the show, Charlie has kept herself busy. This year, she joined the cast of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Charlie has followed in her villainous soap character’s footsteps as she appears as the Child Catcher. The production opened at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton before heading on a UK tour.
Charlie is no stranger to the theatre and played the role of Ursula in the National Theatre’s West End run of The Ocean at the End of the Lane from 2022 until 2023.
