Emily in Paris star Lily Collins’ latest movie has received a disappointing update.
Lily, 35, is set to star in new Mattel film Polly Pocket as the titular character. It was announced that Mattel would be developing a movie focusing on the nostalgic toy following the huge success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
The Polly Pocket film was due to be directed by Lena Dunham, but she has now announced she has quit the project. “I’m not going to make the Polly Pocket movie. I wrote a script, and I was working on it for three years,” Lena, 38, told The New Yorker. She went on to talk about Barbie, praising creator Greta for her “incredible feat” with the 2023 film.

Speaking about Barbie, Lena added: “I felt like, unless I can do it that way, I’m not going to do it. I don’t think I have that in me. I feel like the next movie I make needs to feel like a movie that I absolutely have to make. No one but me could make it. And I did think other people could make Polly Pocket.”
Despite Lena quitting Polly Pocket, Mattel still hopes to continue creating the film. The company said the project is in “active development”.
A spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter: “Polly Pocket is in active development, and we look forward to sharing updates on the project soon. Lena is a remarkable writer and creator, and we wish her all the best!”
Actress Lily confirmed she’d be taking on the role of Polly Pocket in a post shared to social media. She said the role was a “dream come true” for her.
“Little Lil, big news. As a child who was obsessed with Polly Pockets, it’s a real dream come true to announce this project! I am partnering with the most inspiring powerhouse team — Robbie Brenner, @lenadunham, @mattel and @mgmstudios — to reintroduce Polly to the world in a fun, modern way… bringing these tiny toys to the big screen. Truly so excited to be coming on as both a producer and Polly herself! Can’t wait to dive into this pastel world…,” she shared on Instagram.
Lily rose to fame as a child in BBC sitcom Growing Pains, before going on to star in several hit films. She is best known for appearing in titles such as The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Rules Don’t Apply and To The Bone.
In more recent years, she has become known for her portrayal of Emily Cooper in Netflix’s hit series, Emily in Paris. The role has so far earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress as well as a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
