BBC One’s coverage of the Great North Run took a solemn turn as presenter Gabby Logan had to interrupt today’s programming with saddening news.
During the live broadcast from Tyneside this Sunday (8 September), Gabby began with a special airing of Local Hero’s anthem followed by an emotional retrospective of the last 43 years, including highlights of Mo Farah’s final appearance and Claire Lomas’ remarkable achievement in 2016 using a bionic suit after suffering severe injuries from a horse-riding accident.
The sombre moment came when Gabby disclosed that Claire Lomas had tragically died following an accident in Jordan recently. Taking a break from the action, Gabby said: “You may have recognised Claire Lomas in her bionic suit, which she wore to complete the Great North Run, having been paralysed in her sport, eventing. Well, it is very sad news I bring you that Claire died in an accident in Jordan a few days ago.”

In a heartfelt continuation of the tragic announcement, Gabby remembered Claire as an “incredible inspiration” and informed viewers that a more fitting tribute was scheduled for later.
The heartbreaking confirmation of Claire’s death came from her family, who on 30 August released a statement saying: “We are absolutely devastated to lose Claire. We would ask people to respect our privacy in the coming days to allow us to grieve in peace.”
Claire was renowned for her charity work, raising thousands and serving as a motivational speaker. Before her accident, she was an event rider and chiropractor.
Despite being told by medics that she would never walk again, Claire defied the odds by completing the 2012 London Marathon in a bionic suit. The feat took her 17 days and raised £220,000 for the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation..
Following this, Claire had the honour of lighting the cauldron at the 2012 Paralympic Games. She also completed the Great North Run and the Great South Run, both in her bionic suit.
In recognition of her significant contribution to spinal injuries research fundraising, she received an Honorary Degree in 2016. Claire is survived by her husband Dan Spincer and their two daughters, Maisie and Chloe. The family lived in Eye Kettleby, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.
